‘Say bye-bye to the heat…’ There will be heavy rain in the entire month of May, IMD issued alert
New Delhi: There is news of relief for the people suffering from heat in India. India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted above normal rainfall across the country in May 2026. There will also be storms in many areas. The temperature will drop due to rain, but the risk of floods and crop loss has also increased.
India will get wet even before monsoon
According to the latest estimates of IMD, this time the pre-monsoon season will be very wet. In May, rainfall across the country may be more than 110% of the long period average i.e. LPA. This is a big change for the start of summer.
In fact, based on data from 1971 to 2020, the LPA for May is 64.1 mm for North India and the entire country. This year most areas will receive normal or more rainfall. This is expected to provide some relief from the increasing heat and heat wave.
Rain will not be the same everywhere
According to the information received, distribution of rain will not be equal. There are chances of good rain in large parts of the country. But parts of East and Northeast India, as well as East-Central areas may receive below normal rainfall. This difference will affect farming. Especially on those crops which depend on early rains of the season. Farmers may have to change their plans.
Heavy rain alert in these areas in the first week of May
Let us tell you that the weather will change rapidly in the next few days. Rainfall will occur across Sub-Himalayan West Bengal, Sikkim and many parts of Northeast India till May 5. During this period, there will be lightning, storm and strong winds blowing at a speed of 40-60 kmph. Heavy to very heavy rain may occur in these areas. Due to this, the concern of floods and stoppage of daily work has increased. The administration has been put on alert.
Weather will change in North and Central India also
According to IMD, between May 3 and May 6, storm will occur at some places in the western Himalayan region, plains of north-western India and adjoining central India. There will be lightning and strong winds will blow. During this period, there will be stormy weather in Eastern India and East Coast states also.
Meteorologists say such weather is common in the time between spring and south-west monsoon. But the intensity of rain this May may be more than normal. Thunderstorms accompanied by strong winds threaten farming and infrastructure.
Along with relief, there are also signs of concern!
It is noteworthy that this estimate has come at a time when large parts of the country are struggling with rising temperatures. More rain will reduce the heat. Moisture in the soil will increase. The water problem will also go away for some time. But experts are warning. Heavy rain in a short period of time can cause flooding in cities.
Crops may get damaged in sensitive areas. Those working outside will also face problems. IMD has appealed to the state governments and people. Monitor local weather advisories. Especially in those areas where there is a high risk of strong storms and heavy rains. It is important to prepare well in time.
