What is the whole matter?
These claims about America’s Democratic MP from Minnesota Ilhan Omar are nothing new. Around the year 2016-2018, rumors spread rapidly on right-wing bloggers and social media platforms that Umar had married his own brother. However, there is not even an iota of truth in this. This is just a rumour. As far as Donald Trump’s claim goes, it appears to be based on the same old rumors, claims that have been proven wrong time and again. Major fact checking organizations such as Snoops, AP and other media outlets have described it as an unverified rumor. No reliable evidence, document or court record confirms this.

What does the Quran say?
Islam clearly considers brother-sister as mahram (forbidden). Surah An-Nisa (4:23) of the Quran lists mahram relatives (marriage with whom is permanently prohibited). It is written, ‘Forbidden to you are your mothers, your daughters, your sisters, your father’s sisters, your mother’s sisters, your brother’s daughters, your sister’s daughters, your mothers who nursed you, your weaning sisters…’
This verse clearly prohibits brother-sister marriage. In Islam, emphasis is laid on the sanctity of marriage, protection of lineage and social morality. Close relationship among blood relatives is counted among the most heinous sins.
