TMC Goons Threaten Voters With Rape And Murder During Re Polling In Falta
The atmosphere turned tense during re-polling in Falta assembly constituency of South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Saturday (May 2). Locals protested against threats and intimidation by TMC goons. This scene before the counting of votes on May 4 is heart-wrenching and a blot on India’s democracy by any one political party. The protesters demanded re-polling and also appealed to strengthen the security arrangements.
Local people allege that goons and workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) threatened them during and after the voting. “TMC’s Israfil Chowkidar has threatened us that if they win, our houses will be burnt and there will be bloodshed,” said a local. A woman alleged that she faced attack despite voting for TMC. She said, “We voted for TMC, yet we were attacked. We want the accused to be arrested and the safety of women ensured.”

Similar allegations have also come to light in Hasimnagar area of Falta. Local residents said that TMC candidate Jahangir Khan threatened to kill them and rape the women. A woman said, “TMC men entered the village, misbehaved with women and beat up people. Jahangir Khan threatened to kill us and rape our women if he came to power.”
The woman further said that during the protest the police resorted to lathi charge, in which even women were not spared. “We had staged a strike on Dum Dum Road, but when no action was taken, we came out to protest again. The police lathicharged and many people had to be hospitalised.”
It is noteworthy that Falta is part of Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency, which is considered to be the stronghold of TMC party national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee. If TMC loses from here then the party’s name will be in danger in the state, the fear of which is deep. IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, the police observer posted in the state, had already given a stern warning to Jahangir Khan over the allegations of intimidation of voters. He also found that Khan was given more security than the prescribed protocol, on which he also sought clarification.
It is noteworthy that on the instructions of the Election Commission, re-polling is being conducted at 15 polling stations in Magrahat West and Diamond Harbor areas, while re-polling is going to be held at about 30 booths in Falta. This decision has been welcomed by BJP leader and State Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and has alleged irregularities at many booths.
Earlier, names and election symbols of BJP and Communist Party candidates were found taped in front of BJP EVM machines. Apart from this, a case of opening of a strong room without permission also came to light, after which the Election Commission suspended at least six officials. At present, CRPF and Rapid Action Force (RAF) personnel have been deployed in the area to keep the situation under control.
