Indian Army Launches Indigenous Swarm Warfare Project

Taking an important step keeping in mind the needs of the modern battlefield, the Indian Army has launched the indigenous ‘Swarm Warfare’ project. Under this initiative, the Army has invited tenders to develop an indigenous swarm algorithm, which aims to create a secure, integrated and vendor-independent framework for multi-drone operations.

The project will be completed in two phases over a period of six months, with a pre-bid meeting proposed for mid-May 2026. The main reason behind this initiative is the growing security concerns regarding foreign, especially Chinese, components in drone systems. Scrutiny of the supply chain has been further tightened following the risks that have emerged over the past few years, and clear provisions will be added to remove such elements in the upcoming defense acquisition process in 2026.

In the first phase of the project, indigenous ground control station and software-based integration framework will be developed. Its specialty will be that existing drone platforms can be operated under unified command without any hardware or firmware changes. It will also include the ability to operate completely offline, to avoid reliance on external networks or cloud systems in sensitive situations like war.

A live field demo will be conducted at the end of this phase, in which multiple drones will perform surveillance and coordinated missions, such as payload delivery, under unified command.

The second phase will last for four months, which will move the project towards decentralized autonomy. This will include onboard computing, indigenous software stack and advanced battlefield endurance. During the trials, the drones will be tested in complex situations, such as changing formations, redistributing tasks, avoiding collisions and continuing operations even in the event of communication disruption.

The Indian Army has clarified that indigenous control will be mandatory in this project. Source code and intellectual property will be shared with the selected partner, ensuring full national ownership of the technology.

This initiative comes at a time when the utility of drone swarm technology has become clear in recent global conflicts. Their role in surveillance, logistics, payload delivery and combat operations is continuously increasing.

Experts believe that through this project, the Indian Army wants to develop a common control platform that can connect different types of drones into an integrated system and does not depend on any one vendor.

This initiative also strengthens the indigenization efforts in the defense sector under the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ campaign. Also, it will strengthen the country’s overall defense capability in conjunction with parallel indigenous drone and autonomous system projects of the Air Force and Navy.

This initiative of the Indian Army is being seen as an important strategic shift towards technological self-reliance and operational sovereignty in drone warfare.
