Massive fire in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar, 9 people died; Fear of AC blast
At least nine people were killed and four others injured in a massive fire that broke out in a four-storey residential building in Delhi’s Vivek Vihar area in the early hours of Sunday (May 3). Preliminary investigation believes that the cause of the fire was a blast in the air conditioner (AC), although officials have said that the exact cause is yet to be confirmed.
The incident was reported at 3:47 am, after which police and fire department teams immediately reached the spot. A total of 12 fire engines were deployed to extinguish the fire. According to officials, the fire engulfed the second, third and fourth floors of the building, complicating the rescue operation.
During the relief and rescue operation conducted by firefighters and police, 10 to 15 people were rescued safely. According to a senior police officer, “Around 10 to 15 people have been rescued.” Two of the injured suffered minor injuries and have been admitted to hospital for treatment.
Giving information about the dead, officials said that five out of nine bodies were recovered from the second floor, while three bodies were found from the stairs. The body of another person was taken out from the first floor. It is feared that the death toll may increase as some people may still be trapped in the building. According to local residents, the fire spread rapidly, leaving people no chance to recover. Fire department personnel brought the fire under control after several hours of hard work.
At present, the police and fire department team is conducting a detailed investigation of the incident. Officials say that along with the possibility of AC blast, other possible reasons are also being investigated so that the real cause of the accident can be revealed.
