Assam Assembly Elections 2026 Himanta Biswa Sarmas Government Set To Return To Power
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) seems to be heading towards a landslide victory in the Assam Assembly elections 2026. According to early trends, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma seems to be returning to power once again and he may become the only sitting Chief Minister to retain his post after the elections in the four states of Assam, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.
According to the trends received till morning during the counting of votes, NDA has easily crossed the figure of 64 seats required for majority in the 126-member assembly. The alliance seems to be moving towards more than 90 seats and in some trends this figure seems to be crossing 100. According to the latest figures, NDA is leading on about 102 seats, while the Congress-led opposition alliance seems to be limited to just 24 seats.
According to official trends from the Election Commission, the BJP is leading on 78 seats, while its allies Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) are leading on 10 seats each. In this way the total figure of NDA is reaching 97 seats. Whereas Congress is ahead on 24 seats and AIUDF is ahead on only 2 seats.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma himself is leading from Jalukbari seat by a huge margin. In the initial phase itself, he has taken a lead of more than 8,000 votes, which shows his personal popularity and the strong hold of the NDA in the state. Allies are also performing well in their traditional areas, which seems to further strengthen the alliance’s victory.
In contrast, the opposition alliance led by Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi seems to be lagging behind badly. Gaurav Gogoi, contesting from Jorhat seat, is trailing behind BJP’s Hitendra Nath Goswami in the initial rounds. The bet of Gaurav Gogoi, son of former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and three-time Lok Sabha MP, to contest the assembly elections seems to be backfiring at the moment.
Not only Gaurav Gogoi, but other prominent opposition leaders are also lagging behind. Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad chief Lurinjyoti Gogoi are also seen struggling in their respective areas, which has dealt a major blow to the opposition’s ‘grand alliance’.
It is noteworthy that this time more than 85.9 percent voting took place in the state, which is the highest since 1951. While the opposition had claimed a ‘silent wave’, the trends in the results show that voters have supported the NDA’s policies on issues like development, infrastructure and infiltration.
Talking about other states, a tough contest is being seen between BJP and Trinamool Congress in West Bengal, while the possibility of change of power is being expressed in Kerala. A hung situation seems to be emerging in Tamil Nadu also. In this entire scenario, the mandate of Assam has become special, where NDA under the leadership of Himanta Biswa Sarma is headed towards returning to power for the third consecutive time, which is being considered an important milestone in the politics of the state.
