LPG Gas Cylinder | Ever since the war between Iran and Israel started, the supply of gas in India has been greatly affected. Even today, many people in the country do not get gas cylinders on time. But now a significant decrease in LPG consumption has been recorded in the country. LPG consumption in India has come down to less than 16 percent.
According to the latest data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the Ministry of Petroleum, LPG consumption in India fell by over 16 per cent in the month of April. Consumption has declined to around 2.2 million tonnes in April 2026 this year from 2.62 million tonnes in April 2025. That is, a decrease of 16.16 percent has been recorded during the year. Not only the annual decline but also the monthly level is seeing the same situation. To give an example, LPG consumption was 2.379 million tonnes in March 2026, but it has decreased in April. The main reason behind this is the bottlenecks in the global supply chain.
India imports about 60 percent of its LPG requirements, and a major supply comes through the Strait of Hormuz. However, at present, the traffic on this route has been disrupted due to the tension between America, Israel and Iran. This has affected supplies from countries like Saudi Arabia and the UAE. The government has taken some important decisions to deal with this crisis. LPG supply to hotels, industries and other commercial sectors has been curtailed so as not to affect domestic consumption. Also, the domestic cylinder refilling interval has also been extended.
The effect of this situation is being seen in other fuels as well. Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) consumption declined by 1.37 percent in April. It is clear that this has also affected aviation. Although diesel consumption increased, it remained limited to 0.25 per cent, which is much lower than the previous month.
On the other hand, petrol consumption has increased by 6.36 per cent, but this growth is less compared to 7.6 per cent in the month of March. In other words, overall fuel consumption is seen to slow down. The government has been trying to promote clean fuel for the past few years and thus the consumption of LPG has been steadily increasing. However, there seems to be a temporary break in this growth due to current global developments.
