Speaking to the media during an award ceremony in Kolkata, Javed Akhtar said that he really liked the film Dhurandhar directed by Aditya Dhar. Appreciating the film, he declared it a “superb film”. However, expressing his preference, he also noted, “I liked the first half of the film more than the second half.” In this ‘spy thriller’ starring Ranveer Singh, he plays the role of an Indian spy operating in Karachi. Since its release, the film has been a phenomenal success at the box office.

A candid opinion on the ‘Propaganda Films’ controversy

Of late, many films have been facing criticism and being labeled as ‘propaganda’. Presenting his position on this issue, Javed Akhtar clarified that he does not agree with this type of label (classification). He argued that every story has its own underlying point of view and ideology.

Raising a very pertinent question, he asked, “I don’t understand exactly what you mean by the term ‘propaganda film’. Every story stands for some side. Just because a certain segment of the audience dislikes a story, does it become ‘propaganda’?” He further asserted that every filmmaker has full right to express his point of view. According to him, even if the story of a film is purely fictional, the writer’s or director’s thinking is bound to seep through it in some form or the other.

‘Dhurandhar 2’ dominates the box office

It would be important to mention here that after the success of Dhurandhar, its sequel Dhurandhar: The Revenge is currently hitting the theatres. According to reports, the film has crossed the Rs 1,000 crore mark in just one week. Along with this, it became the fifth Hindi film to gross such amount in the shortest time, surpassing major films like Pathan, Jawan and Dangal.
