Increase in 99 out of 126 assembly seats

Guwahati. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Assam seems to be heading towards forming the government for the third consecutive time, where it is leading in 99 out of 126 assembly seats. The majority figure required to form the government in the state is 64.

The Election Commission has released the trends of 126 seats in the state, in which BJP is leading on 79 seats, while its alliance partners Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) has won one seat and is ahead on eight. According to this, Congress is ahead on 25 seats, while its ally Raijor Dal is ahead on two seats.

AIUDF is leading in two seats and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) is leading in one constituency.

Assam Jatiya Parishad’s Lurinjyoti Gogoi, who was earlier leading in Khowang constituency, has now lagged behind BJP’s Chakradhar Gogoi. Chief Minister Himanta Vishwa Sharma is leading in Jalukbari constituency, while in Jorhat, Congress state unit president Gaurav Gogoi has lagged behind his nearest rival Hitendranath Goswami of BJP.

Assembly Speaker and BJP candidate from Tamulpur, Vishwajit Daimary is ahead of United People’s Party-Liberal’s Pramod Boro. After the second phase of vote counting, Raijor Dal President Akhil Gogoi is once again ahead of his rival Kushal Duwari of BJP. NDA ally AGP President Atul Bora and Working President Keshav Mahant are ahead in Bokakhat and Kaliabor respectively.

Former senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Bora, who joined the BJP before the elections, are leading in Dispur and Bihpuria constituencies respectively. Ministers Ranoj Pegu, Piyush Hazarika, Ashok Singhal, Prashant Phukan, Vimal Bora and Chandramohan Patwari are also leading in their respective constituencies. The ruling BJP has 64 MLAs in the outgoing assembly, while its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) have nine, United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) seven and Bodo People’s Front (BPF) three. BPF has recently rejoined the alliance.
