‘Rape Festival’ in Nigeria: Women brutalized in public, clothes torn and made to run naked on the streets
New Delhi: An incident that came to light from Nigeria has created deep concern and outrage at the international level. The news of alleged misbehavior and sexual harassment of women during a traditional fertility festival has made the whole matter serious. It is being told that the situation suddenly worsened during the Alu-Do festival held in Delta State in the month of March. This festival is celebrated by the Oramudu community, but this time allegations of violence and harassment under its guise have brought it to the center of controversy.
The atmosphere became tense during the festival
According to reports, some groups of men present in public places chased the women. Many women alleged that their clothes were forcibly torn and they were abused in public.
The people present in the crowd remained spectators
A large number of people were present there during the incident. It is alleged that many people kept making noise instead of stopping this violence. This crowd included not only adult men, but also some minor boys.

Girls also became targets
Reports say that the victims also include girl students from a nearby university. Some victims have been admitted to the hospital for treatment, where they are undergoing treatment.
The victim narrated her ordeal
A student victim of the incident shared her experience and said,"Hold it, hold it, it’s a woman."
"They pounced on me like bees. A large crowd started pulling my clothes, until they made me naked. They were pulling my breasts and touching my entire body… I was screaming for help,"he told the New York Post.
The victim said that eventually a passerby intervened and saved her from the mob. During this time his phone was also snatched. She said that she is still trying to recover from the physical and mental trauma.
Police took action, many arrested
Delta State Police, acting in this case, have arrested several suspects, including local community leaders and four youths.
Women’s rights activist’s response
Rita Aiki, activist of Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Organization, expressed concern over this incident and said,"When people can do this openly, and others consider it a spectacle, it goes far beyond individual actions. It tells you what is considered normal in a society."
Strict action will be taken against the accused
Delta State Police spokesperson Bright Edafe said strict legal action would be taken against all those involved in the matter.
He said, "The Police Commissioner has directed that the suspects be handed over to the State Police Directorate without any delay. The Commissioner is committed to ensuring that all those involved in this case are arrested and brought to justice."
