New Delhi: The unexpected victory secured by the BJP in West Bengal is being viewed as a major setback for the TMC and Mamata Banerjee. Perhaps even Mamata Banerjee herself had not anticipated such a lacklustre performance by the TMC. The situation reached a critical point when Mamata Banerjee herself lost her seat in the Bhabanipur constituency. During the vote-counting process, Mamata Banerjee personally visited the counting center and accused the BJP of rigging the election.

Meanwhile, Kalyan Banerjee—a TMC MP and senior Supreme Court lawyer—shared a telephonic conversation he had with Mamata Banerjee on social media. In this audio clip, the outgoing Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, leveled allegations of malpractice regarding the election results in Bhabanipur. Describing this “vote theft” as a “dirty game,” she also held the Election Commission responsible for the alleged irregularities.

Mamata Banerjee levels serious allegations

Following the BJP’s electoral surge in West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee leveled several serious allegations and made significant claims. She asserted that she was leading against the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari in the vote count up until the 16th round, with only a few rounds remaining.

During the phone call, she can be heard alleging that the electoral process had been compromised, claiming that “goons” had allegedly infiltrated the counting centers to intimidate and threaten officials and polling agents. Mamata Banerjee further alleged that she, too, had been subjected to physical assault. She went on to accuse the Election Commission, the CRPF, and local election officials of acting under directives from Delhi to favor the BJP.

A Neck-and-Neck Battle in Bhabanipur

The Bhabanipur constituency had emerged as a high-profile battleground in the West Bengal elections. The contest featured Mamata Banerjee herself facing off against the BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari. In the previous election, Suvendu Adhikari had defeated Mamata Banerjee in the Nandigram constituency. The battle for Bhabanipur evolved into a thrilling contest, with a fierce, neck-and-neck race beginning the moment the postal ballots were opened at 8:00 AM.

In the initial rounds, Mamata Banerjee took the lead, securing an advantage of nearly 2,000 votes over her principal rival, Suvendu Adhikari. In the second round, Adhikari staged a comeback and established a lead of over 1,500 votes. Throughout most of the rounds, the contest remained a seesaw battle, with both leaders constantly trading the lead. Consequently, Suvendu Adhikari defeated Mamata Banerjee in the final rounds.
