CSK vs DC: Hosein reveals Rahul dismissal plan

New Delhi: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) spinner Akeal Hosein has revealed the tactical brilliance behind KL Rahul’s dismissal, crediting captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s field placement strategy during their emphatic eight-wicket win over Delhi Capitals (DC) in IPL 2026.

Hosein played a key role in restricting DC’s batting line-up at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, finishing with figures of 1/19 in four overs. His crucial wicket of in-form batter Rahul, who managed just 12 runs off 13 balls, turned the momentum in CSK’s favour early in the innings.

Masterplan behind Rahul’s dismissal

Speaking after the match, Hosein explained how a well-thought-out field setting and disciplined execution helped him outsmart Rahul. The left-arm spinner revealed that the plan was to tempt the batter into playing risky shots towards the boundary riders.

“I wanted to force KL Rahul to hit to my boundary fielders. With a long-off and mid-wicket in place, I knew if he had to score boundaries, he would need to clear those areas. Fortunately, he got caught trying to go over long-off, which worked well for me,” Hosein said.

He also credited skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad for backing the strategy and making key decisions, including a change of ends that played a role in executing the plan effectively.

“Changing ends wasn’t my call; it was the skipper’s call. But you have to be open-minded and ready for any challenge. Sticking to the plan is key,” he added.

Discipline crucial in powerplay overs

Hosein highlighted the challenges of bowling in the powerplay, especially on surfaces that do not offer much assistance to spinners. He stressed that maintaining discipline and controlling runs is more important than aggressively hunting wickets during this phase.

“You need both mental toughness and skill, especially on pitches that are not conducive to spin. With only two fielders out in the powerplay, you cannot afford to be too greedy. Sticking to the plan and bowling economically is key,” he explained.

His disciplined spell ensured that DC could not build early momentum, putting pressure on their middle order.

DC post competitive total

Delhi Capitals posted 155/7 in their allotted 20 overs, thanks largely to a late resurgence. Tristan Stubbs (38) and Sameer Rizvi (40 not out) stitched together a crucial 65-run partnership to take the team to a respectable total after early setbacks.

CSK’s bowling attack, led by Noor Ahmad (2/22), maintained control through the innings. Hosein’s economical spell, along with contributions from Gurjapneet Singh (1/29), ensured DC never gained the upper hand.

Samson, Sharma power CSK chase

Chasing 156, CSK had a shaky start as captain Ruturaj Gaikwad fell early. However, Sanju Samson and Kartik Sharma steadied the innings with a match-winning unbeaten partnership.

Samson led the charge with a fluent 87 not out off 52 balls, bringing up his half-century in just 32 deliveries. Sharma provided solid support with an unbeaten 41 off 31 balls, finishing the game in style with a six and a boundary.

Their unbroken 114-run stand guided CSK to victory with 15 balls to spare, sealing a comprehensive win for the five-time champions.

Playoff race heats up

The victory keeps CSK firmly in contention for the IPL 2026 playoffs. The team now sits sixth on the points table with five wins from 10 matches, and will be aiming to build momentum in the remaining fixtures.

With the tournament entering a crucial phase, performances like Hosein’s and the composed chase led by Samson underline CSK’s growing confidence.

Conclusion

Akeal Hosein’s smart bowling and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s tactical acumen proved decisive as CSK outplayed DC in a crucial IPL 2026 encounter. Rahul’s dismissal, orchestrated through a clear plan and precise execution, highlighted the importance of strategy in T20 cricket. As CSK continue their push for a playoff spot, such all-round performances could prove vital in the matches ahead.
