Virat Kohli was shocked by the death of his fellow cricketer, said, ‘Shocked and saddened by his death…’

New Delhi: Bad news has come from Punjab Cricket. Former fast bowler Amanpreet Gill has passed away at the age of 36. There is a wave of mourning in the cricket world due to his demise. It is being told that Amanpreet was fighting the disease for the last several months. Amanpreet played cricket with Virat Kohli at Under-19 level. The news of the demise of his fellow player has shocked Kohli.

I am shocked and sad – Virat Kohli 

Let us tell you that Virat Kohli, playing for RCB in IPL 2026, expressed grief over ‘X’ on Thursday (07 May 2026). Kohli wrote, “Shocked and saddened to hear the news of Amanpreet Gill’s death. Pray for his family and loved ones. May they find strength. May Amanpreet’s soul rest in peace. Om Shanti.”

The news of Amanpreet’s demise came to light on Wednesday. Born on 16 September 1989, Amanpreet was a part of the India Under-19 team in the 2000s.

Amanpreet has played with Virat 

Let us tell you that in July 2007, Amanpreet went on a tour of Sri Lanka for the Under-19 Tri Series. Apart from India, Bangladesh was also playing in that series. Playing with players like Virat Kohli and Manish Pandey, Amanpreet took 9 wickets in 5 matches. He bowled amazingly in the final against Bangladesh in Colombo. Amanpreet had taken 2 wickets for just 14 runs. India Under-19 won that match by a huge margin of 129 runs.

Amanpreet could never debut in Team India 

Amanpreet Gill was in the squad of Punjab Kings, then Kings XI Punjab, in 2009 and 2010. But he did not get a chance to play in the playing eleven. In his first class career, he played 6 matches between 2006 and 2008 and took 11 wickets in his name.

Also served as a selector   

After playing cricket, Amanpreet Gill also contributed in the selection. He was a member of the Senior Selection Committee of Punjab Cricket Association. He performed this responsibility in 2019-20, 2020-21, 2022-23 and 2024-25.

Expressing condolences on social media, PCA wrote, “Punjab Cricket Association expresses its deep sorrow on the demise of former cricketer and senior selection committee member Amanpreet Singh Gill. He played cricket with full passion for India Under-19, Kings XI Punjab and Punjab. Our condolences to the bereaved family. May Waheguru give peace to the departed soul and courage to the family.”

Punjab Kings also expressed grief 

It is noteworthy that Punjab Kings also expressed their condolences through Instagram story. “Deeply saddened by the demise of Amanpreet Singh Gill. He represented Punjab with pride. He was a part of the Punjab Kings family. Condolences to the family and friends,” the franchise wrote. The team also wrote ‘Rest in Peace’ along with Amanpreet’s picture. With the departure of Amanpreet, Punjab Cricket has lost a dedicated player and selector. The players and fans who played together are remembering him.
