Self-reliant India! Successful test of ‘Tara’ glide weapon system

India has completed the first successful flight test of indigenous weapon system ‘Tactical Advanced Range Augmentation’ (TARA). The test was conducted jointly by the Defense Research and Development Organization and the Indian Air Force on May 7 off the Odisha coast. ‘Tara’ is a special ‘Glide Weapon System’, which transforms ordinary unguided bombs and warheads into state-of-the-art ‘precision guided’ weapons. In simple words, now even ordinary weapons will be able to attack their targets with more accuracy.

According to the Defense Ministry, with this system it will be possible to destroy enemy ground targets more effectively at lower cost. DRDO’s Hyderabad-based Research Center Building has developed this system in collaboration with other laboratories. The specialty of ‘Tara’ is that state-of-the-art but less expensive technology has been used in it. This increases both the firepower of the weapons and the accuracy of hitting the target. Indian industries also had important participation in this project. ‘Development Cum Production Partners’ (DCPP) and other Indian companies have collaborated in its development and now the production process has also started.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, Indian Air Force and the industry sector for this successful test. He said that this test is a major step towards strengthening India’s indigenous defense capability. Meanwhile, Secretary, Department of Defense Research and Development and DRDO Chairman Sameer V. Kamat also praised the scientists, engineers and the entire team.

According to experts, indigenous systems like ‘Tara’ will provide more accurate and low-cost options to the Indian Air Force in future combat operations. This will reduce dependence on foreign technology and will also strengthen the ‘Self-reliant India’ campaign.

Meanwhile, just a few days ago DRDO and Indian Navy jointly launched a successful salvo of ‘Naval Anti-Ship Missile, Short Range’ (NASM-SR). The test was conducted in the Bay of Bengal off the Odisha coast. This is being considered a big achievement in terms of maritime security. The special thing was that for the first time two naval anti-ship missiles were fired from a helicopter in a very short time. Both the missiles successfully accomplished all objectives during the test. For this, state-of-the-art equipment like special radar, electro-optical system and telemetry were used. These equipment were deployed by the Integrated Test Range based at Chandipur. The missiles also successfully demonstrated ‘waterline hit’ capability during the test. That is, they are capable of causing more damage to enemy ships by accurately targeting them very close to the water surface.
