“Somnath Temple is a symbol of the unwavering resolve of our culture”
In an article written on the completion of 75 years of the reopening of the Somnath temple to devotees after renovation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the struggle and sacrifice of the people who made sacrifices to protect this temple in Gujarat and contributed to its reconstruction from time to time will never be forgotten. He said that Somnath is not just a religious place, but a symbol of India’s unbreakable self-power, cultural continuity and capacity for renaissance. The Prime Minister also recalled the historic event of the inauguration of the temple by India’s first President Rajendra Prasad on May 11, 1951.
The Prime Minister wrote that despite facing several attacks, destruction and looting, the Somnath Temple remained the center of India’s faith and culture. He said that the story of Somnath is the story of the living soul of India, which no matter how many times attempts were made to break it, it stood up again every time. Referring to Prabhas area, he said that this place has been an important center of devotion, penance and spirituality since ancient times.
While mentioning the history of Somnath Temple in detail in the article, the Prime Minister mentioned the attacks that took place in different periods. He said that the temple suffered devastating attacks several times, but each time the society rebuilt it. For this reason Somnath became a symbol of the renaissance power of India. Prime Minister Modi specifically mentioned the role of Sardar Vallabhai Patel. He said that after completing the big task of unification of the country after independence, Sardar Patel had resolved to reconstruct the Somnath temple on 13 November 1947. This was not just the reconstruction of the temple, but a symbol of the renaissance of India’s self-confidence.

In his article, the Prime Minister emphasized on the approach of “development as well as heritage”. He said that in the last few years many religious and cultural places across the country have been developed. Referring to places like Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Kedarnath Temple, Ram Temple, Mahakaleshwar Jyotirling and Kamakhya Temple, he said that along with providing modern facilities, equal attention is being given to preserving the tradition and heritage of India.
The Prime Minister also mentioned his personal emotional connection with the Somnath Temple. He said that as the Chief Minister of Gujarat and later as the Prime Minister, he had visited Somnath several times. He also mentioned the work done for modern infrastructure, beach development, passenger amenities and cultural preservation in the Somnath area.
At the end of the article, Prime Minister Modi urged the countrymen to visit Somnath Dham. He said that Somnath is not just a temple but a symbol of the immortal consciousness of India. India has faced every crisis on the strength of faith, culture and unity and this same strength will take the country forward in future also.
