What are the rules related to Ekadashi fast?
refuse to eat rice
In Hindu religious scriptures, eating rice on the day of Ekadashi is considered completely prohibited. There is a religious belief that a person who eats rice on this day will be born in the form of a reptile in the next life.
give up tamasic food
Apart from this, a devotee observing fast a day before the fast i.e. from Dashami Tithi should give up Tamasic food like onion, garlic, meat, alcohol and lentils.
plucking basil leaves is strictly prohibited
It is told in the religious scriptures that the worship of Lord Vishnu is considered incomplete without Tulsi, but on the day of Ekadashi, plucking basil leaves Strictly prohibited. Besides, offering water to Tulsi is also prohibited on this day.
It is said that, on this day Mata Tulsi also observes Ekadashi fast. Therefore, Tulsi Dal should always be plucked and kept a day before for the puja i.e. on Dashami Tithi.
Do not use abusive words
According to religious texts, Apra Ekadashi fast is not only considered a festival of giving up food but also of keeping the mind and thoughts pure. One should not have feelings of jealousy, anger or malice towards anyone during the fast. It is said that abusing, lying or criticizing someone can also reduce the effect of the fast. Also, it is considered auspicious to observe celibacy from the night of Dashami Tithi.

On the day of Ekadashi, the fasting person should not sleep at all during the day. The entire time of this day should be spent meditating, chanting hymns and mantras of Lord Vishnu and Mother Lakshmi. On this date, ‘Jagran’ is also observed at night. According to the scriptures, teething on the day of Ekadashi is prohibited. Instead, you can clean your mouth by chewing lemon, blackberries or mango leaves or gargling with water. If you keep these things in mind, then you get the full results of the fast.
