Smart Meter: Prepaid smart meter system ended in UP, big relief to millions of consumers

Smart Meter: There is news of great relief for the electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. Yogi government has taken a big decision after increasing complaints regarding prepaid smart meter system. Now about 75 lakh prepaid smart meters of the state will be converted into postpaid system, which will save people from problems like frequent recharge and wrong deductions. This change has been targeted to start from the night of 9th May and be completed by 10th May.

Decision taken to change the system

Consumers were constantly complaining that the meter reading was increasing rapidly and the balance was being deducted without any reason, resulting in higher electricity bills. In view of these problems, the government has decided to change this system. Under the new system, consumers will now get postpaid bills on the basis of usage every month. This will eliminate the hassle of recharge and the normal billing process will be implemented as before.

Electricity Department Security Deposit

The government has also clarified that the remaining balance in the prepaid meter will be safe and will be adjusted in the first postpaid bill of the next month. After converting the meter into postpaid, the electricity department will also take a security deposit, which can be added to the bill or recovered in installments.

Appeal to keep mobile number updated

According to the new rules, bills will be issued on the 10th of every month and consumers will get 15 days to make payment. If the bill is not paid within the stipulated time, the electricity connection may be automatically disconnected. The electricity department has appealed to the consumers to keep their mobile numbers updated, so that the bills can be delivered directly to their phones. Besides, the facility to view bills will also be available through online portal and chatbot.
