Who is Peter Magyar?

Peter Magyar was born in March 1981. He studied Law and Humanities at Pazmani Peter Catholic University. Early in his career he was a trainee judge and lawyer, after which he worked in various positions in the Ministry of External Affairs and other government institutions.

In 2024, he was elected leader of the Tisza party and in the same year he also became a member of the European Parliament. His political journey progressed rapidly and he won a big victory in the 2025 parliamentary elections.

Historic victory in elections

In the parliamentary election held on 12 April, the Tisza party defeated the Fidesz–KDNP coalition led by current Prime Minister Viktor Orbán. The party secured a two-thirds majority in Parliament by winning 141 out of 199 seats, which is considered a decisive mandate.

This victory has brought about a major change in Hungarian politics and has raised hopes for new policies and reforms in the country.

Parliament leadership and new appointments

In the first session of the new parliament, Tisza Party vice-chair Agnes Forsthofer was elected Speaker of the National Assembly. He received 193 votes, while only two MPs opposed it.

In addition, the Parliament also elected six Vice-Presidents, thereby formalizing the new administrative structure.
