Shanmugam Faction Rebels In Aiadmk After Tamil Nadu Election Defeat Demands Epss Resignation

After the crushing defeat in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, internal strife within the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam i.e. AIADMK has come to the fore. Many party MLAs and former ministers are now openly questioning the leadership of party chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) and demanding him to step down.

According to sources, senior leader C.V. Many MLAs and former ministers considered close to Shanmugam are angry with the EPS. He says that after four consecutive election defeats, the party needs new leadership. However, party sources claim that despite the increasing pressure, EPS is in no mood to resign at the moment.

AIADMK faced a big disappointment in Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. The party could win only 47 out of 234 seats, after which dissatisfaction within the organization increased rapidly. Leaders believe that the party’s political strategy and leadership style has weakened the morale of the workers.

According to sources, the tussle between the EPS camp and CV Shanmugam supporting leaders has now started coming to the fore. Growing differences within the party have also given rise to fears of a possible break.

For the past few days, there was talk in political circles that the Shanmugam faction might join hands with Joseph Vijay’s party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). TVK performed brilliantly in the assembly elections and won 108 seats, although it was 10 seats short of the majority.

After this, TVK gathered support by holding talks with Communist Party of India, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League and crossed the majority mark. After this, Vijay took oath as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu in a grand ceremony on Sunday (May 10).

Meanwhile, while the TVK was busy gathering support to form the government, around 30 AIADMK MLAs, including CV Shanmugam, were camping at a resort in Puducherry last week. This had further intensified speculations about major political developments within the party. Later EPS himself reached the resort and tried to keep the MLAs united.

According to sources, during this period, reports of backchannel talks between Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and AIADMK also came to light. It is being told that CV Shanmugam was angry with this possible contact, after which he decided to get closer to the TVK supported government.

Amidst the rapidly changing equations in Tamil Nadu politics, now everyone’s eyes are on the next step of AIADMK. If differences within the party increase further, a major reshuffle may be seen in Tamil Nadu politics in the coming days.
