Frontal organizations and departments are incomplete, how will Congress be able to become strong in UP?

The country’s oldest political party, Congress, is struggling with organizational weakness in Uttar Pradesh. Even after the crushing defeat in the West Bengal and Assam assembly elections, the party leadership has not yet learned any major lesson. Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections are proposed in the year 2027 but the Congress organization in the state has not yet been fully established.

Ajay Rai has been holding the responsibility of State Congress President for about two years and nine months but the State Executive has been dissolved for one and a half years. Most of the committees have not been formed even at the district and assembly level. In such a situation, an atmosphere of despair is being seen among the party workers. On the other hand, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is busy strengthening the organization at the booth level after continuous success in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Political experts believe that if Congress does not strengthen its organizational structure in time, it may prove very difficult for it to compete with BJP in 2027.

39 frontal organizations and departments still incomplete

There are a total of 39 frontal organizations, departments and cells in Uttar Pradesh Congress. The state leadership has made appointments in some cells but a large number of departments are still lying vacant. Many organizations do not even have responsible officers. Many important departments like Scheduled Caste Department, Human Rights Department, Ex-Servicemen Department, Minority Department, Publicity and Publication Department, Backward Class Department, Unorganized Labor Department, Medical Cell and Sports Cell are still waiting for active leadership.

Better performance in Lok Sabha but weak organization

In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, Congress had contested on 17 seats in alliance with Samajwadi Party. Of these, the party won 6 seats. Rahul Gandhi won from Rae Bareli seat while from Amethi, Kishori Lal Sharma won a big victory by defeating the then BJP MP Smriti Irani. Apart from this, leaders like Imran Masood from Saharanpur, Danish Ali from Amroha, Pradeep Jain Aditya and Tariq Anwar from Jalaun strengthened the party.

Congress currently has only two MLAs in the state assembly. Aradhana Mishra alias Mona had won from Rampur Khas seat and Virendra Chaudhary had won from Farenda seat of Maharajganj in the year 2022.

Lack of big face is also a challenge

The biggest challenge facing the state Congress is considered to be that of strong leadership. Apart from State President Ajayrai, at present there is no big face visible who can strengthen the party in the entire state. There is discussion in the state office that the organization can be formed this month itself. There is also speculation among some leaders regarding the appointment of a new state president. Now it remains to be seen whether Congress contests the upcoming assembly elections with the help of new leadership or enters the electoral fray under the leadership of the current state president.
