PCOS and PMOS: A new perspective on women’s hormonal health
New debate on hormonal problems in women
The rapidly increasing hormonal problem in women, commonly known as PCOS, has now become a new topic of discussion. It is being claimed in some social media platforms and medical reports that it will now also be known as PMOS. This suggestion has been given by an AIIMS doctor, after which the debate on this issue has intensified.
Why the need to change the name?
Experts believe that the name of PCOS is limited only to “ovary”, whereas this problem is not limited to reproductive organs only. It is a complex metabolic and hormonal disorder, which affects the entire body. Therefore, a new name, “PMOS,” has been suggested to better describe the true nature of the disease—a metabolic and hormonal imbalance.
What is PCOS?
PCOS is a condition in which the hormonal balance in women’s body gets disturbed. This can result in irregular menstruation, weight gain, unwanted facial hair and reproductive problems.
Is PMOS an official name?
Currently “PMOS” is not officially recognized by any international medical organization. This is currently a proposed name that some experts are using to describe PCOS more broadly. Doctors say that the main objective of changing the name is to develop the correct understanding of this disease among the patients and the general public, so that it is not seen only as “ovary problem”.
expert opinion
According to gynecologists, PCOS is a lifestyle and hormone-related disease, in which insulin resistance and metabolic changes also play an important role. Therefore, the discussion on giving it a broader term may move forward with time.
