Preparation for relief from traffic jam in Delhi, MCD will build 58 new parking projects
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has taken a big step to deal with the problem of ever-increasing vehicle pressure and traffic jams in the capital Delhi. The corporation is working on the biggest parking expansion project ever in the capital. Under this, 49 new surface parking and 9 multilevel parking projects will be developed in different areas of Delhi. According to MCD, this expansion will be done in the busiest commercial and residential areas of Delhi, including key areas like Karol Bagh, Rohini, Najafgarh, Pitampura and City-SP zone.
How much parking is planned in which area?
These proposals include 5 parking spaces in Karol Bagh, 8 in City SP Zone, 3 in Rohini and 10 in Najafgarh. Apart from this, there are plans to develop parking facilities at many places in Civil Lines, Shahdara (North and South), West, Keshav Puram and Central Zone. MCD officials said that some places have already been identified, while inspection and feasibility study is still going on in many areas. At these places, vacant land on roadsides, vacant plots and available spaces near markets are being evaluated. Under this project, land identification work has started at many places. The proposals are already in the relevant departmental processes and the process of obtaining necessary clearances from various land owning agencies is underway. This is a big infrastructure project, which will be completed in a phased manner. It is estimated that it may take about 2-3 years to be completely ready.
According to officials, a total of 25 locations are being selected under this scheme, out of which 9 proposals have currently reached the advanced stage. The most important part of this entire plan is a huge multilevel parking facility proposed near Idgah metro station. This area is located near the Sadar-Paharganj commercial belt, where there is heavy traffic due to wholesale markets, irregular parking on the roadside and daily traffic jams. This ramp-type parking proposed near Idgah Metro station will be developed over an area of approximately 23,000 square meters. It will have a parking capacity of around 2,100 cars, which is expected to reduce traffic pressure in congested areas like nearby Sadar Paharganj. The estimated cost of this project is said to be around Rs 346 crore. It was initially planned to be developed under the Chief Minister’s Development Fund, but now it has been decided to pursue it under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, so that the project can be implemented more effectively.
According to officials, a puzzle-type automated parking is proposed at a cost of Rs 80 crore in LU block of Pitampura under Keshav Puram zone. The project is currently awaiting land use approval as the concerned plot is owned by the Delhi Education Department. Similarly, another puzzle type multilevel parking system has been proposed in UV block of Shalimar Bagh at a cost of about Rs 40 crore. Apart from this, work is also underway on the plan to build G+4 multilevel parking in Babarpur area of Shahdara North at a cost of about Rs 31 crore.
There is a proposal to build a large multi-level parking at a cost of about Rs 380 crore in the community center located at Preet Vihar Market under Shahdara South Zone. Apart from this, work on similar projects is also going on in busy areas like Karol Bagh, Madipur and Rani Bagh. These areas are being given priority as they often result in traffic jams, roadside encroachments and heavy crowding during peak hours due to lack of parking. According to MCD, there are currently 30 multilevel parking facilities operating in Delhi, while the corporation is operating 419 surface parking spaces.
