President Murmu approved increasing the number of judges in the Supreme Court to 37, now the disposal of cases will speed up.
New Delhi, 17 May. Taking a big step towards strengthening the justice system of the country, President Draupadi Murmu has approved increasing the number of judges in the Supreme Court. The President has issued the ‘Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026’, under which the approved number of judges in the Supreme Court has now been increased from 33 to 37. The Chief Justice of India will not be included in this. The main objective of this decision is to reduce the increasing burden of cases pending in the Supreme Court and to provide speedy justice to the people.
It is believed that increasing the number of judges will speed up the hearing of cases and long pending cases will be resolved quickly. Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge) Arjun Ram Meghwal shared this information on the social media platform ‘X’. He said that the President has approved the ordinance to increase the number of judges by amending the ‘Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Act, 1956’.
This ordinance came just a few days after the decision of the Central Government, in which the Union Cabinet had approved the proposal to increase the posts of four new judges in the Supreme Court. Earlier, in the Union Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 5, it was decided to introduce the ‘Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Bill, 2026’ in Parliament.
The government says that this step had become necessary in view of the continuously increasing work in the Supreme Court and the number of pending cases. The appointment of new judges will increase the efficiency of the court and will help in reducing delays in hearings. The first law related to increasing the number of Supreme Court judges in India was made in the year 1956. After this, the number of judges has been changed from time to time according to the increasing needs of the judiciary.
Earlier in the year 2019, the number of Supreme Court judges was increased from 30 to 33. Now after the new ordinance, the total number of approved judges in the Supreme Court, including the Chief Justice of India, will become 38. This is being considered an important step towards further strengthening the judicial system of the country and providing timely justice to the people.
