Drinking alcohol becomes expensive in Karnataka, prices of many brands increased due to new excise policy
Knews Desk-The Karnataka government has implemented a new Alcohol-in-Beverage (AIB) based excise duty system on liquor, after which the prices of liquor have increased across the state. The new rates have been implemented in all cities and districts including Bengaluru. This decision of the government has affected the prices of many popular liquor brands, due to which now customers will have to spend more money to buy liquor.
New prices fixed for different categories
The state excise department has fixed new prices for different categories of whiskey, rum, vodka, gin and brandy. The new rates will be applicable on 90ML, 180ML and 750ML packs. The government has divided liquor into seven different slabs, on the basis of which prices have been determined.
The budget category i.e. Slab-1 and Slab-2 include brands like Legacy Special, Carnival Rum, Bangalore Whiskey and Amrit XXX Classic Rum. Their prices have now been fixed between Rs 370 and Rs 485. Whereas, the mid-range category includes brands like Old Tavern Whiskey, Bagpiper XXX Rum, 8PM Blue and McDowell’s No. 1 Celebration Rum, whose prices have increased to Rs 560 to Rs 650.

There has been a big change in prices in the premium range also. The price of 750ML bottles of liquor like Officer’s Choice Gold, Old Monk, DSP Black, Imperial Blue and McDowell’s Reserve has now reached Rs 850 to Rs 900. The most expensive category includes brands like Royal Stag, Blenders Pride, Signature, Smirnoff and Magic Moments. The price of a 750ML bottle of Royal Stag has been fixed at Rs 1,145, while the price of Blenders Pride and Signature has reached Rs 1,330.
Government will increase revenue
The government believes that the new excise system will increase the state’s revenue. However, this increase in liquor prices will have a direct impact on the pockets of common customers. Traders and customers are now keeping an eye on the market reaction and sales patterns.
