PM Modi received Sweden’s biggest honour, awarded with ‘Royal Order of Polar Star Commander Grand Cross’

PM Modi visits Sweden: Sweden has honored Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the ‘Royal Order of the Polar Star, Commander Grand Cross’. This is the highest honor given to any head of state. This is the 31st global honor received by Prime Minister Modi.

According to the official website, the ‘Royal Order of the Polar Star’ was established in 1748, and is intended to recognize individual efforts in the interest of Sweden. Particularly in the field of public service, as well as for the successful discharge of public duties and responsibilities.

Main points of discussion

Earlier, PM Modi held wide-ranging talks with his Swedish counterpart, Ulf Christerson, focusing on trade, technology, defense and other key areas. Swedish Prime Minister Christerson extended a special welcome to PM Modi, who had reached Sweden for a two-day visit.

PM Modi had earlier visited Sweden in 2018 to participate in the first India-Nordic summit. During the delegation-level talks, both sides reviewed all aspects of their bilateral relations and explored new avenues of cooperation to promote mutual trade.

In 2025, the value of trade between the two countries is expected to reach US$7.75 billion. During the discussions, both sides focused on enhancing bilateral relations in areas such as green transition, Artificial Intelligence (AI), emerging technologies, startups, resilient supply chains, defence, space, climate change and people-to-people ties.

PM Modi provided air security by Swedish Air Force jets

Upon entering the European nation’s airspace, Prime Minister Modi’s plane was provided air cover by Swedish Air Force jets. At the airport, he received a warm welcome from his Swedish counterpart, Kristersson. Soon after reaching Gothenburg, PM Modi met members of the Indian diaspora. They were welcomed with musical performances, including a rendition of the hymn ‘Vaishnav Jan To’ by Swedish opera singer Charlotte Huldt, and a captivating Bharatnatyam performance by the students of Leela Academy. During the welcome ceremony, which was held in the presence of Prime Minister Christerson, a spectacular display of Bengali culture was presented. On social media, PM Modi remarked that Bengali culture is popular across the world, and Sweden is no exception.
