China Earthquake Magnitude 5.2: A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 5.2 shook the entire area in Liuzhou city, located in the Guangxi region of southern China, early Monday morning. This earthquake occurred at a time when people were fast asleep in their homes, leaving very little chance for rescue. So far, there have been reports of more than a dozen buildings collapsing and many people buried under the debris in this disaster.

Strong tremors felt at midnight

According to data from the US Geological Survey (USGS) and the China Earthquake Agency, the earthquake occurred at around 12:21 am local time. Its center was located in Liunan district of Liuzhou at a depth of only 8 kilometers from the ground.

Geologists say that shallow earthquakes are more destructive on the surface and this was the reason why this earthquake caused huge devastation in Liuzhou city. The tremors were so strong that their impact was felt as far as Hong Kong, 550 kilometers away.

Four people were taken out from under the debris in critical condition and taken to the hospital. Officially, three people are still reported missing and relief teams are busy searching for them. It is a matter of relief that essential services like electricity, water and gas are currently running smoothly in the area.

Relief and rescue operations continue

China’s emergency system was activated immediately after the accident. More than 315 disaster management personnel along with 51 fire and rescue vehicles have been deployed in the affected area. The Guangxi regional headquarters has implemented Level-III emergency response and Level-IV emergency response at the national level. Amidst the darkness of night and debris, rescue workers are trying to rescue the trapped people with the help of modern equipment. Major earthquakes often occur in China’s western provinces like Sichuan and Yunnan, but a 5.2 magnitude earthquake in the Guangxi region is a matter of concern for experts. The region is generally considered seismically stable but the disaster in Liuzhou has again raised questions about safety standards and the strength of old buildings. At present, China’s Disaster Management Ministry is keeping a close watch on the situation.
