Babri becomes Jain temple, Islampura will be known as Krishna Nagar, know why Pakistan is removing Muslim names from the roads

Lahore Old Street Names Restored: Taking a big decision, the government of Pakistan’s Punjab province has decided to change the names of many old roads of Lahore. These roads will now be called by the names which were used before independence and partition. Officials say that the aim of this step is to revive the old cultural identity and historical heritage of Lahore.

After independence and partition, the names of many streets, squares and neighborhoods of Lahore were changed for religious and political gains. The old Hindu, Sikh and British-era names were removed and names of Islamic, Pakistani or local leaders were kept in their place. Now the Punjab government has approved the plan to bring back these old names.

Boards with old names in the city

Recently, boards with old names have been installed in many areas of the city. For example, Islampura has been renamed as Krishna Nagar. Similarly, Babri Masjid Chowk has been renamed as Jain Mandir Chowk. The names of nine places have been changed in the last two months.

A government official said the decision was taken in a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. He said that this step has been taken to save the historical identity of Lahore. The plan is being led by former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, who also heads the Lahore Heritage Area Revival Project.

Return of names of Hindu Gods and Goddesses

The places in Lahore where there is talk of bringing back their old names include many historical places like Krishna Nagar, Sant Nagar, Dharampura, Lakshmi Chowk, Jain Mandir Road, Bhagwan Pura, Shanti Nagar and Ram Gali.

Apart from this, there is also a plan to reconstruct the old cricket grounds and traditional wrestling arena in Minto Park. This is the same place where famous wrestlers like Gama Pehalwan and Imam Baksh used to compete. Before partition, the Hindu community also celebrated Dussehra here.
