Sona Pappu Arrested by ED In Kolkata: ‘Sona Pappu’ alias Biswajit Poddar, who was the most dangerous face of West Bengal politics and underworld, has finally come under the grip of law. ED officials interrogated him for about 10 hours at CGO Complex in Salt Lake, when he did not get any answer, they arrested him on serious charges of money laundering and extortion. Sona Pappu, who was absconding from the law for the last three months, reached the ED office on Monday amid heavy security. His condition worsened in the face of sharp questions from the central agency and after finding concrete evidence of financial misappropriation, ED arrested him late in the night.

He was missing after his name surfaced in a major incident that took place in Rabindra Sarovar area in February. When Pappu entered the ED office on Monday, he was asked ‘Is he afraid of arrest?’ In response Pappu confidently said that I have not done anything wrong.

Many serious allegations against Sona Pappu

Sona Pappu, a resident of Ballygunge in South Kolkata, faces serious charges of controlling a gang in Kasba and Gariahat areas, illegally grabbing land, issuing threats and extortion. A case has also been registered against him under the Arms Act. In search of this huge amount of illegal financial transactions, the ED had conducted a massive search operation at Pappu’s camp in April last year. During that raid, around Rs 2 crore in cash, a luxury car and several suspicious property related documents and records worth crores of rupees were recovered from his house.

Pappu’s network is quite deep

After investigation, ED came to know that Pappu’s criminal network is very deep. On the basis of clues received from this case, the investigating agency first arrested Behala businessman Joy Kamdar. After interrogating Joy, another sensational information came to light. Last month, the ED raided the house of influential Kolkata police officer Shantanu Singh Biswas on Ferna Road. The police officer was called to the police station for questioning and the central agency arrested Pappu on charges of having direct links with the criminal gang and receiving financial benefits. The arrest of a police officer has brought a new twist to this case.

Due to being absconding for a long time since February, ED felt that Pappu was hiding in some other state. But after his return, questions started being raised as to how he was living a luxurious life and how he was handling his financial situation. According to police and ED sources, investigators estimate that large sums of money were being regularly sent to Pappu through hawala channels while he was in hiding.
