Yogi’s 9 years and 17 thousand encounters, these cities of UP top the list
Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh has claimed that in the last nine years, large scale action has been taken against criminals in the state. According to an official statement issued by the government, 289 notorious criminals have been killed in police encounters since 2017. At the same time, in the first five months of the year 2026, 23 alleged criminals have been killed in encounters.
According to government data, since Yogi Adityanath became the Chief Minister in March 2017, Uttar Pradesh Police has conducted a total of 17,043 encounter operations. During these operations, 34,253 criminals were arrested, while 11,834 criminals were injured. The government has described these campaigns as part of its “zero tolerance” policy. According to these figures, on an average there have been about five police encounters every day in Uttar Pradesh in the last nine years.
When did Yogi Adityanath take oath as Chief Minister?
Yogi Adityanath took oath as the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh for the first time on 19 March 2017. At that time BJP had got a big victory in the assembly elections. After this, BJP returned to power again in 2021 and Yogi Adityanath took over as Chief Minister for the second consecutive time.
How many policemen were martyred?
The government statement said that during this period, 18 policemen were martyred in the line of duty, while 1,852 policemen were injured.
Which cities of UP top the list?
- According to the data, Meerut zone of western Uttar Pradesh remained at the forefront in encounter cases. Here the police conducted a total of 4,813 encounter operations. During these operations, 8,921 criminals were arrested and 3,513 criminals were injured. At the same time, 97 notorious criminals were killed by the police in encounters. During the action in Meerut zone, 477 policemen were injured, while two policemen were martyred. Meerut zone stood first in terms of encounter action in the state.
- A total of 1,292 encounters took place in Varanasi zone. Here 2,426 criminals were arrested and 29 criminals were killed. During this period, 907 criminals and 104 policemen were injured.
- Agra zone stood third in the state in encounter cases. 2,494 encounter operations were conducted here, in which 5,845 criminals were arrested. In these actions, 968 criminals were injured, while 24 criminals died. Besides, 62 policemen were also injured.
- According to government figures, 21 criminals were killed during 2,222 encounters in Bareilly zone. At the same time, 20 criminals were killed in 971 encounters in Lucknow zone.
- 18 criminals died during 789 encounters in Ghaziabad Commissionerate, which was the highest number among all the Commissionerates of the state.
- 12 criminals were killed during 791 encounters in Kanpur zone. At the same time, 12 criminals were killed in 147 encounters in Lucknow Commissionerate. 11 criminals died during 643 encounters in Prayagraj zone.
- Similarly, 10 criminals were killed in 489 encounters in Agra Commissionerate.
- 9 criminals were killed during 1,144 encounters in Gautam Buddha Nagar.
- 8 criminals died in 699 encounters in Gorakhpur zone.
- 8 criminals were killed in 146 encounters in Varanasi Commissionerate. 6 criminals died in 150 encounters in Prayagraj Commissionerate.
- 4 criminals were killed in 253 encounters in Kanpur Commissionerate.
What other action other than encounter?
The statement also said that apart from the encounter, action was also taken under provisions like confiscation of properties of criminals, Gangster Act and National Security Act (NSA). According to the government, this campaign against criminals is not limited to mere statistics, but has also proved effective in establishing the rule of law in the state.
The press note said that due to the swift and strict action of the police, many criminals have been forced to leave the state and Uttar Pradesh is strengthening its identity as a safe and fear-free state.
