Congress returns to power in Tamil Nadu after 59 years, gets two ministerial posts in Vijay government

Chennai: A big and historic change was seen in the politics of Tamil Nadu on Wednesday. After almost 59 years, Congress is once again going to be a part of the state government. Two Congress MLAs will be made ministers in the upcoming cabinet expansion of the government led by Chief Minister Vijay. The Congress leadership has announced that Advocate S. Rajesh Kumar and P. Vishwanathan will take oath as ministers at Raj Bhavan on Thursday morning.

Venugopal shared information through social media

Information about this decision was shared by Congress General Secretary Venugopal through social media. He called it a historic moment for Congress. According to the party, for the first time since 1967, Congress is going to become a direct part of the government in Tamil Nadu.

S. Rajesh Kumar represents Killiyur assembly constituency in Kanyakumari district, while P. Vishwanathan is the MLA from Melur seat in Madurai district. Congress President Mallikarjun has approved the inclusion of both the leaders in the cabinet.

Congress leaders say that both the ministers will try to live up to the expectations of the public and take forward the public welfare agenda of the party. Former Union Minister P. Chidambaram also welcomed this decision and congratulated both the MLAs.

In the recently held Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, Congress had first contested the elections in alliance with DMK and won five seats. But after the election results came, the political equations changed. Chief Minister Vijay’s party TVK needed allies to get majority in the Assembly, after which Congress decided to distance itself from DMK and support Vijay government.

What do political analysts believe?

Political analysts believe that this change did not happen suddenly. Actually, Congress wanted a share in the power of Tamil Nadu for a long time. The DMK leadership was not in favor of a coalition government or power sharing. Because of this, tension gradually increased in the relations between the two parties.

Since coming into politics, Vijay had talked about giving proper participation to allies. Under this strategy, Congress is now getting a place in the cabinet. It is being told that in the coming time, leaders of allies like VCK and IUML can also be included in the cabinet.

Why is the return of Congress important in Tamil Nadu?

This return of Congress in Tamil Nadu is also considered important because Congress was in power in the state from 1952 to 1967. In that period C. Rajagopalachari, K. Veteran leaders like Kamaraj and M. Bhaktavatsalam took over the power of the state. But after DMK came to power in 1967, Congress was never able to join the government.

Now the return of Congress to power after almost six decades is being considered as the beginning of a new phase in the politics of Tamil Nadu. The swearing-in ceremony to be held on Thursday is considered important for the coalition politics of the state.
