Will Shubhendu Adhikari become Bengal’s Himanta? Jahangir Khan’s words indicated
In Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), many leaders from other parties have become Chief Ministers. Recently Subhendu Adhikari also joined this list and became the Chief Minister of West Bengal. Shubhendu Adhikari was earlier in Trinamool Congress (TMC) and was a minister in the state government. Now, whatever has happened in the Falta Assembly elections, is showing that Shubhendu Adhikari can also prove to be very beneficial for BJP like Himanta Biswa Sarma. Before Subhendu Adhikari, Himanta Biswa Sarma came to BJP from Congress and within no time he helped BJP a lot in the North-Eastern states. Now he is counted among such strong leaders of BJP who have the ability to win the party on his own.
The graph of Himanta Biswa Sarma has increased very fast. He had joined BJP even before the 2016 assembly elections but BJP did not make him the Chief Minister then. He was a minister in Sarbananda Sonowal’s government for 5 years. When BJP won again in 2021, Himanta put forward his claim and BJP made Himanta Biswa Sarma the Chief Minister in place of Sarbananda Sonowal. This time he was successful in making BJP win on his own and without thinking twice, BJP made him the Chief Minister again. This shows how important he has become for BJP and how much confidence the party leadership has in him.
What did Shubhendu Adhikari do?
Subhendu Adhikari, who came to BJP from TMC, has defeated a strong leader like Mamata Banerjee twice. He remained the Leader of Opposition from 2021 to 2026 and despite all the speculations, he also became the Chief Minister. Within a few days of taking oath, he has been seen implementing the party’s agenda and manifesto very strictly. However, the biggest discussion is taking place about Phalata Assembly seat. Jahangir, who is counted among the leaders very close to Abhishek Banerjee, has now not only stepped back from this seat but can also be seen praising Shubhendu Adhikari.

Interestingly, Subhendu Adhikari had also campaigned in Phalta. On Jahangir Khan’s retreat, Subhendu Adhikari said that if he could not even find polling agents, there was no other option left but to retreat. Now it is being seen as the success of Subhendu Adhikari that he was successful in managing a fierce opponent. TMC was continuously winning the elections on Phalta Assembly seat and now with its withdrawal from the field, it is believed that BJP can win here. If this seat goes to BJP’s account, then Subhendu Adhikari’s dominance will become stronger.
What did Jahangir Khan say for Shubhendu?
Surprisingly it was seen that Jahangir Khan, who had reached the court a few days ago, started praising Shubhendu Adhikari. Stepping back from the candidature, he had said, ‘I am the son of Falta and I want this area to remain peaceful and developed. The Chief Minister has announced a special package for the development of Falta, hence I have decided to stay away from the re-polling process.

How will Shubhendu become like Himanta?
In the last few years, it has been seen that Himanta Biswa Sarma has made a tremendous dent in the Congress. He openly says that he also decides who gets the ticket in Congress. Himanta had said the same thing even when cross voting took place in the Rajya Sabha elections. This time, just before the assembly elections, senior Congress leaders Pradyut Bordoloi and Bhupen Bora joined BJP and Congress suffered a loss. Himanta was also said to be the brain behind this. In this way he isolated Gaurav Gogoi and succeeded in defeating Congress badly.
Subhendu Adhikari is also seen doing something similar. He is said to have succeeded in managing a leader of his arch rival party who was calling himself ‘Pushpa’ and was vowing not to bow down. Another thing that Himanta and Shubhendu have in common is that both of them come from the main opposition party and the party that is in power in the state. Both of them were ministers in the state when they changed parties. Subhendu Adhikari had also left the ministerial post and joined BJP and Himanta Biswa Sarma had also done the same. Shubhendu could not bring BJP to power for the first time but its seats increased from 3 to 77.

He remained active for 5 consecutive years and emerged as a staunch opponent of Mamata Banerjee. The result was that after the election results came, BJP immediately decided on his name and gave him preference over its old leaders. Now the way he has started, if it continues like this, then in the coming times, he too can emerge as a big poster boy of BJP like Himanta Biswa Sarma in terms of implementing the agenda.
