Elsbeth EP Breaks Down Finale & Who Is Returning in Season 4

Elsbeth’s Season 3 finale delivered the perfect closing line, and EP Jonathan Tolins revealed why it matters. The showrunner broke down the finale’s themes and teased which fan-favorite characters could return in Season 4.

Jonathan Tolins on Elsbeth Season 3 finale and who will return

Executive producer Jonathan Tolins spoke to TV Insider about the Elsbeth Season 3 finale and potential Season 4 returns. The finale aired on May 21 and guest-starred Tony-winner Patti LuPone and Shrinking’s Michael Urie. Tolins revealed the Season 4 writers’ room begins this summer. He also discussed which characters could appear in the upcoming season.

Tolins explained that Season 3 focused on Elsbeth embracing her optimistic nature without apology. “In a world where things can be really awful, being positive and cheerful without being naive is a choice and also a discipline,” he said. The finale’s closing line captured this theme perfectly. “There’s no accident that the very last line of the season is, ‘Isn’t it great to love things?’” Tolins added.

Carra Patterson’s Kaya Blanke returned in the finale, and her last scene left the door open. Tolins called it “leaving a chess piece on the board.” He expressed clear enthusiasm about the pairing. “We think Elsbeth and Kaya is kind of a magical combination and we love having her,” he shared.

Meanwhile, Tolins showed interest in bringing back The Good Fight’s Sarah Steele as Marissa Gold. Ivan Hernandez’s Alec Bloom could also return after winning the mayoral election. “All that can leave stuff for us to play with,” Tolins noted.

Teddy Tascioni’s engagement to Roy also opens new storylines for the fourth season. “Roy mentioned that he really wants to have kids, so there might be stuff to explore there as well,” Tolins teased. A potential wedding could bring Will Patton back as Mike Tascioni, Elsbeth’s ex-husband. “I certainly think that if Teddy’s going to get married, then I would want to know what’s going on between him and his father,” Tolins admitted.
