A new chapter has begun in the political history of West Bengal. After the formation of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government for the first time in the state, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari is seen super active and in ‘tremendous action mode’ as soon as he takes oath. Within just 12 days of government formation, the Chief Minister has implemented many such tough, historic and far-reaching decisions, which have changed the entire administrative and social system of Bengal.

From making the national anthem mandatory in madrassas to giving green signal to central schemes and starting huge financial assistance for women, let us know about those 9 big decisions of Shubhendu government whose impact is visible on the ground.

1. ‘Vande Mataram’ mandatory in all madrassas and schools

Shubhendu government issued a very strict and historic order on 19 May. Under this, singing ‘Vande Mataram’ during the morning prayer meeting (assembly) has been made completely mandatory in all government, aided schools and all madrassas under the education department of the state.

2. All central schemes including Ayushman Bharat should be implemented immediately

Many public welfare schemes of the Central Government, which were banned in Bengal during the previous government of Mamata Banerjee, have been given the green signal by the Shubhendu government with immediate effect. The most prominent among these is ‘Ayushman Bharat Yojana’, with the implementation of which lakhs of poor families of Bengal will now be able to get free treatment up to Rs 5 lakh annually. Apart from this, schemes like PM Kisan Samman Nidhi are also being expanded rapidly.

3. Orders to start the stuck census immediately

The census process was stalled in West Bengal for a long time. The central government had issued a nationwide order in this regard in June 2025 itself, but the then Mamata government had kept it on hold in Bengal. As soon as the new government assumes power, it has issued an official order to start the census process in the state on a war footing.

4. Big step on border security: 600 acres of land will be handed over to BSF

The government has taken a big decision to stop illegal infiltration and cross-border smuggling. To speed up the work of installing barbed fencing on the international border, the government has announced that within the next one and a half months, 600 acres of land will be handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF). This step will provide a permanent solution to the border disputes and security shortcomings that have been pending for years.

5. CAA process started, relief to refugees

With the arrival of Shubhendu government, the process of completely implementing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has started in the state. By December 31, 2024, the work of giving citizenship certificates to people of 7 minority communities who came to India after being persecuted from neighboring countries has been started. Along with this, strict instructions have been given to the police that the refugees coming under this process should not be detained or tortured in any way.

6. IAS and IPS officers will be sent for central training

Taking a step towards administrative reforms, the government has decided that all IAS, PCS and WBPS officers of state cadre will now be sent to special training camps organized by the Central Government. Due to political conflicts in the previous government, officers were not allowed to go to these central training programs.

7. Bumper relaxation of 5 years in the age limit of government jobs

Shubhendu government had given a big gift to the unemployed youth of Bengal in its very first cabinet meeting. The proposal to give a huge relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit for the youth preparing for government jobs in the state has been approved, due to which lakhs of youth who have been waiting for the vacancy for years will get another chance.

8. New Central Criminal Law and Indian Judicial Code come into force

Now orders have been given to completely implement the new central criminal laws in place of the old system in the state. The new Indian Judicial Code and related sections have now been made legally effective in place of the British era IPC and CrPC.

9. Religion-based special financial assistance stopped, ‘Annapurna Yojana’ will start

Making a strong attack on the politics of appeasement, the government has announced that from the month of June, special financial assistance to the Madrassa department and any specific religious group will be completely stopped. The government will not provide any financial help to any person or institution on the basis of religion, rather welfare schemes will be run equally for all.

In this context, for the empowerment of women ‘Annapurna Scheme’ from June 1 is being launched, under which cash financial assistance of ₹ 3,000 will be transferred directly into their bank accounts every month to eligible women of the state.

Complete ban on killing of cows and buffaloes without fitness certificate

To stop cow slaughter and illegal cattle smuggling, the new BJP government of West Bengal has strictly cited the Cattle Preservation Act of 1950 and an old order of the Calcutta High Court. According to the new order, now in the entire state, without the official Animal Cruelty Prevention Department or authorized doctors. ‘Fitness Certificate’ No cow, calf or buffalo can be slaughtered. Strict legal action will be taken against those violating the rules under direct non-bailable sections.
