Elections announced for 24 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states, voting will be held on June 18

The Election Commission of India has announced the elections for a total of 24 Rajya Sabha seats in 10 states. If necessary, voting for all these seats will be held on June 18. These 24 include four seats each from Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat. Among the MPs whose tenure is ending, prominent names include Congress National President Mallikarjun Kharge, former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Congress’s Digvijay Singh, Union Ministers Ravneet Singh Bittu and Shakti Singh Gohil.

 

The Election Commission has said that the notification will be issued on June 1 and the last date for nomination will be June 8. Nomination papers will be scrutinized on 9th and names will be withdrawn by 11th June. If there is a need for elections i.e. voting somewhere, then votes will be cast on June 18 from 9 am to 4 pm. Counting of votes will be completed from 5 pm on the same day and the entire electoral process will be completed on June 20.

Where will elections be held?

Elections are to be held for a total of 24 seats in 10 states. Out of this, the seat vacant after the death of Shibu Soren is vacant since August 205. The tenure of the remaining 22 members is to end in June 2026 and the tenure of one MP is to end in July. Out of 24, 4 seats each are falling vacant in Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Apart from this, three seats each of Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan are also falling vacant. Two seats of Jharkhand and one seat each of Manipur, Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh and Mizoram are falling vacant on which elections are to be held.

 

In this, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Arunachal Pradesh have governments of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) or its allies. In Karnataka and Jharkhand, Congress and its allies are in power. At the same time, in Mizoram, there is a government of Lalduhoma of Zoram People’s Movement which is not a part of NDA or INDIA alliance.

The retiring MPs include 12 from BJP, 4 from Congress, 3 from YSR Congress, 1 from Telugu Desam Party (TDP), 1 from National People’s Party, 1 from Janata Dal (Secular) and one from Mizo National Front. One seat has become vacant after the death of Shibu Soren. If we look at the situation in the state assemblies, BJP is certain to be strong in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Andhra Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. At the same time, Congress can become strong in Karnataka.
