CSK spent Rs 41 crore in the auction, still did not reach the playoffs, where was the mistake?

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had entered the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction with the second largest purse. He was left with Rs 43.40 crore. After finishing last last season, CSK had released 10 players including Mathisha Pathirana, Devon Conway and Rahul Tripathi. Also, he traded Ravindra Jadeja and Sam Curran with Rajasthan Royals and included Sanju Samson in his team. After the big release list, CSK had the most money in the auction after Kolkata Knight Riders.

It was understood that CSK would overcome the shortcomings of IPL 2025 in the auction and would emerge as a better team in the new season but this could not happen. Despite spending Rs 41 crore, it failed to buy a good foreign fast bowler, due to which it had to face defeat for the third consecutive season. The franchise had placed bets on New Zealand fast bowlers Matt Henry and Jack Foulkes. Henry was able to take 2 wickets in 3 matches. Whereas Foulkes was not considered worthy of inclusion in the playing XI. This pace bowling all-rounder spent the entire season on the bench. In such a situation, the question arises that when there was no trust in him, then why did CSK buy him?

Untapped millionaires disappointed

CSK had spent Rs 28.40 crore on uncapped players like Prashant Veer and Karthik Sharma. By purchasing both of them for Rs 14.20-14.20 crore, CSK made them the most expensive uncapped players in IPL history but their performance on the field was nothing special. Middle order batsman Karthik could score only 295 runs in 11 innings at a strike rate of 136.57. He certainly played some good innings but could not justify his price.

Prashant Veer, who was considered to be Jadeja’s replacement, proved to be an even worse flop. He could add only 90 runs in 5 innings. He was given bowling in only one match, in which he conceded 25 runs in 2 overs. Due to poor performance, he could never become a regular part of the CSK team.

Players’ injuries troubled CSK

Even before the start of IPL 2026, CSK suffered a huge blow when Nathan Ellis was ruled out of the entire season due to a hamstring injury. With Ellis out, CSK’s death overs bowling has weakened, which has troubled them throughout the season. Khalil Ahmed and Ayush Mhatre also got injured after playing the first few matches. Dewald Brevis did not play in the initial matches due to injury. Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni also struggled with injury.

Amidst the growing list of injured players, CSK staked claim for the playoffs by winning 6 out of 11 matches but at the last moment Jamie Overton suffered a thigh injury. Overton’s injury proved so fatal for CSK that after his return home, the team lost its last three league matches and once again failed to reach the playoffs.

Captain Ruturaj failed

Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s form helped CSK the most. Rituraj could score only 273 runs in 14 innings at a strike rate of 123.44. Not a single impactful inning came from his bat. By the end of the season, he even pushed himself to number 3 but this move also did not work.
