India-Cyprus Ties: India-Cyprus bilateral talks in Delhi, PM Modi said – transformed relations into strategic partnership
Delhi. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday held wide-ranging talks with Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides during which India and Cyprus upgraded their ties to a strategic partnership and formed a joint task force to facilitate deeper cooperation in sectors such as infrastructure and shipping. The two leaders also discussed the Middle East crisis and the Ukraine conflict. Prime Minister Modi said that India supports all efforts for an early end to hostilities.
In a statement issued to the media, Prime Minister Modi said, “Investment from Cyprus to India has almost doubled in the last decade. Trust has increased between the two countries and many new possibilities have emerged from the India-EU Free Trade Agreement. He said that taking advantage of this, both the countries have set a target of doubling this investment again in the next five years.
Prime Minister Modi said, “And to realize this resolve, today we are transforming our trusting relationship into a strategic partnership.” Giving information about various aspects of the conversation with Christodoulides, the Prime Minister said that the friendship between India and Cyprus is “strong and future-oriented”.
Prime Minister Modi said, “We also discussed global issues. Be it Ukraine or West Asia, we will continue to support efforts to end conflicts quickly and achieve peace. He said, “We are also unanimous that reform of global institutions is urgent and important to address growing global challenges.”
The Prime Minister said that both the countries have also decided to increase cooperation in the areas of maritime security and anti-terrorism. Christodoulides said India and Cyprus have decided to set up a joint task force for cooperation in key areas such as infrastructure and shipping. Christodoulides began his three-day visit to India on Wednesday.
