Ram Gopal Varma recalls emotional reaction to Michael Jackson’s death

Indian filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma shared an emotional note about late pop icon Michael Jackson after watching the biopic Michael.

The Satya director had posted a long message on social media, where he looked back at the day he learned about Michael Jackson’s death in 2009. He described the moment as shocking and deeply personal.

In his note, he wrote, “I HATE MICHAEL .After watching MICHAEL film, my memory went back to that horrible day June 25 th , 2009.”

“When I slept late with the television still murmuring like a ghost in the darkness of my room , and as I groggily woke up in the morning and my eyes went to the screen to see those terrible white letters against black: “Michael Jackson is Dead.”For several long seconds,this must be a nightmare, I thought. Why the hell would I even dream something so horrible? But the banner on the tv stayed and the news ticker kept crawling,” Varma added.

He further shared that he had first discovered Michael Jackson during his college days in Vijayawada. According to him, watching Thriller for the first time had left a strong impact on him.

“Thriller hit me like a punch in the gut. It was not just a song or a dance. It was an invasion,” he wrote.

He also described how Michael Jackson’s music videos had influenced him over the years. He mentioned songs including Billie Jean, Beat It, Smooth Criminaland Black or White while speaking about the singer’s impact on popular culture.

Varma stated that Michael Jackson’s work had remained an inspiration during discussions related to song picturisation in his own career.

In another part of the post, he explained why the singer’s death had affected him emotionally.

“I hate Michael Jackson for dying.I hate him for proving that even he was human,” the Shiva director wrote.

The Rangeela director ended the note by expressing admiration for the late singer and said the memories connected to his music had stayed with him for years.

“I love you more than I can express in words. Wherever you are now, in whatever dimension, I am sure you are moonwalking across galaxies, creating space storms, with a brilliance which even the stars cannot contain.And I will carry that daze you gave me in that Vijayawada video parlour till i die,” Varma concluded.

Michael Jackson died on June 25, 2009, at the age of 50. His music and performances continued to be remembered by fans across the world.
