Farmer Deb Madkami of Tamsa village has successfully cultivated Miyazaki mango, one of the most expensive mangoes in the world. The price of this mango in the international market is said to be Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per kg. This unique mango with its red colour, attractive shape and excellent taste has given recognition to the farmer, but now it has become a cause of concern for him. Due to fear of theft, the farmer is guarding his garden at night. He has also installed a bamboo fence around the tree.

It is said that each Miyazaki mango fruit weighs more than one kilogram. Therefore, the price of mangoes growing on a tree can reach lakhs of rupees. Villagers are also coming to the farmer’s garden to see this rare mango.

This plant was purchased four years ago

According to local people, about four years ago, a man named Sarba Kumar Bisoi had given a Miyazaki mango plant to Deb Madkami. At that time, he was told that it was the most expensive variety in the world. Then the farmer took care of the plant with great effort and attention. Now, for the first time, the tree has borne fruit.

Increased concern about sales

Although the mangoes are fully ripe, the biggest challenge for the farmer is to sell them. In this remote tribal area, they are unable to find any buyer to buy such expensive mangoes. The farmer says that if the mangoes are sold then he will get relief.

Deb Madkami said, “I bought this mango plant four years ago. Now, it has borne fruits. Its price in the international market is Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh per kg. But I don’t know where to sell it. This is what worries me these days.”

Local people believe that if the government and the horticulture department help and make proper marketing and export arrangements, the farmers of the area can earn good income by cultivating Miyazaki mango.
