BJP’s blast in West Bengal, historic victory on Falta seat, Debangshu Panda won by a big margin.
Kolkata: There was a big upheaval in the politics of West Bengal when BJP candidate Debangshu Panda won the Falta assembly seat of South 24 Parganas district by a huge margin. This seat was counted among the areas under the influence of Trinamool Congress for a long time, but this time in the re-polling, BJP changed the political atmosphere by gaining a big lead.
TMC’s stronghold flourishes
It is being told that the BJP candidate won by a margin of more than one lakh votes, which is being considered an important development in the politics of the state. Falta seat comes under Abhishek Banerjee’s Diamond Harbor Lok Sabha constituency and is considered a TMC stronghold. Voting was held here for the first time on April 29, but during the elections, serious allegations like EVM malfunction, booth capturing and intimidation of voters came to light. The controversy increased so much that the Election Commission had to cancel the entire voting process.
After this, the Commission conducted re-polling at all 285 booths on May 21. This time the security arrangements were kept very tight and a large number of police forces were deployed. Voting was conducted in a peaceful atmosphere and more than 88 percent voting was recorded, which was considered very encouraging.
In the counting of votes held on May 24, BJP candidate Debangshu Panda was leading right from the beginning. As the counting of votes progressed, his lead continued to strengthen. In the final result, he got the maximum number of 1,49,666 votes. CPM’s Sambhu Nath Kurmi stood second, who received more than 40 thousand votes. Congress candidate Abdur Razzaq Mollah stood third. Whereas TMC candidate Jahangir Khan got very less votes. The special thing was that even before the re-poll, he had refused to contest the elections.
After the results, a phase of allegations and counter-allegations started in the politics of the state. Former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee raised questions on the election process and made serious allegations on voter irregularities and the role of central forces. On the other hand, Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari termed BJP’s victory as the people’s mandate and launched a scathing attack on TMC. He said that the Diamond Harbor model has now become a symbol of loss for TMC.
What did Suvendu Adhikari say?
Shubhendu Adhikari claimed that he had appealed to the public to make the BJP candidate win by one lakh votes and the people supported him even more than that. He assured that BJP will work for the development of the area and Phalta will be given a new identity.
According to political analysts, such a big victory of BJP in TMC’s strong area can have a big impact on the politics of West Bengal in the future.
