Petrol Crosses Rs 113 In Kolkata, Rs 111 In Mumbai; 4th Price Hike In 2 Weeks (Check Rates In Your City)

Indian consumers are facing another major fuel shock as petrol and diesel prices have been increased once again across the country.

Oil marketing companies raised petrol prices by ₹2.61 per litre and diesel prices by ₹2.71 per litre on Mondaymarking the fourth fuel price hike within the last two weeks.

With the latest revision, petrol prices in Delhi have now crossed ₹102 per litre, while diesel prices have moved above ₹95 per litre.

The repeated increases are being linked directly to the ongoing Iran-US conflict, disruptions in Middle East oil supply chains, and uncertainty around the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most critical oil transit routes.

Chennai₹107.77/litre₹99.55/litre

Kolkata currently has the highest petrol prices among India’s four major metro cities.

Iran War Driving Global Oil Uncertainty

The ongoing conflict involving Iran has severely disrupted global energy markets over the past few weeks.

The Strait of Hormuz, through which a significant portion of the world’s oil supply passes, remains under pressure due to geopolitical tensions and shipping disruptions. Global crude oil prices had surged sharply earlier this month, forcing Indian oil companies to gradually increase domestic fuel rates.

Experts say Indian oil companies had initially absorbed some losses to avoid sudden shocks to consumers. However, repeated increases now indicate that rising crude prices are becoming difficult to sustain internally.

India imports a large share of its crude oil requirements, making domestic fuel prices highly sensitive to international developments.

Common Citizens Likely To Feel Bigger Pressure

The latest hike is expected to impact household budgets significantly.

Higher petrol and diesel prices usually increase costs across multiple sectors including:

  • Transportation
  • Food delivery
  • Cab services
  • Logistics
  • Agriculture
  • E-commerce operations
  • Essential goods movement

Diesel prices are especially important because most freight and commercial transportation in India depends heavily on diesel-powered vehicles.

Economists warn that prolonged fuel inflation could eventually push up prices of daily-use items and increase overall inflationary pressure in the economy.

Opposition Targets Government Over Repeated Hikes

The latest increase has also intensified political criticism.

Opposition leaders accused the government of failing to shield consumers from global fuel volatility and questioned why prices continue rising rapidly despite some softening in international crude prices recently.

Interestingly, the latest hike came even as Brent crude reportedly slipped below the $100-per-barrel mark after recent volatility.

The government and oil companies, however, continue to maintain that the broader geopolitical situation remains unstable and unpredictable.

Fuel Inflation Becoming A Global Problem

India is not alone in facing energy-related inflation.

Several countries globally are experiencing rising fuel costs due to the ongoing Middle East conflict and supply chain disruptions linked to the Iran war. Experts now fear a broader global fuel crisis if instability in the region continues for an extended period.

Many governments worldwide are already reviewing fuel taxes, strategic reserves, and energy policies to manage inflationary impact on consumers.

More Volatility May Continue Ahead

Energy analysts believe fuel prices may remain volatile over the coming weeks depending on:

  • Iran-US conflict developments
  • Strait of Hormuz shipping conditions
  • Global crude oil movement
  • Currency fluctuations
  • Domestic taxation policies

For Indian consumers, however, the immediate concern remains simple — transportation and living costs are becoming increasingly expensive with every fresh fuel hike.
