Caution in AC service: How to avoid gas scam
Increasing demand for AC in summer
The heat in the country has reached its highest level, due to which the demand and use of air conditioners (AC) has increased. People make sure to get their AC serviced before switching it on so that they can get better cooling. However, a small mistake in this process can lead to a loss of thousands of rupees. Many technicians take advantage of this opportunity to extort extra money from customers by saying things like ‘gas is low’. On this subject, experienced AC mechanic Mohammad Hussain has warned that customers should avoid certain questions.
Which question could become your mistake?
According to Mohammad Hussain, the biggest mistake occurs when the customer asks the technician, ‘Is there less gas in the AC?’ On hearing the answer to this question, many mechanics extort Rs 1200 to 1500 or more by saying that they are filling gas without any real need. In fact, a common customer cannot know whether the AC is actually low on gas or not, thereby unknowingly becoming a victim of fraud.
How does the technician do the actual check?
An honest and experienced technician checks the functionality of the AC before touching it. He runs the AC for 15 to 30 minutes to inspect its cooling, airflow and outdoor unit. If there is a problem, it tells the customer where the fault lies—whether it’s a dirty filter, a condenser problem or a gas leak. The correct procedure is for the technician to carry out the inspection and not for the customer to make any assumptions.
Why does a customer’s mistake become an opportunity?
When the customer himself asks ‘Is the gas low?’ As the question asks, it becomes an easier path for the technician. He may add additional charges by advising immediate gas refill. Subsequently, the customer often has no technical knowledge, forcing him to take the matter for granted. This is why this small question can turn into a big financial disaster.
How to monitor AC service wisely?
If you are getting your home AC serviced, it is important to keep some things in mind:
– Let the technician check for himself, do not give any suggestions in advance.
– Pay attention to cleaning the filter, condenser and outdoor unit.
– Do test the cooling of the AC after service.
– If the cooling is not proper, then get the gas or other technical problem confirmed.
– In case of gas refill, definitely ask where the leakage occurred and whether it was rectified or not.
What is the right way to protect yourself?
The safest approach is for the client to focus only on the outcome. That is, this is the biggest indication whether the cooling of the AC is correct or not. If cooling is fine, there is usually no gas problem. But if the cooling is weak, it is necessary to get the cause thoroughly checked by a technician.
Information is the best defense
A little caution during AC service can save you from big losses. With the right information and understanding, you can not only get better service but also stay safe from any gas scam. Remember, it is not wise to ask every question, some questions can also cause harm.
