The euphoria around the 2026 FIFA World Cup has been eclipsed by rising concerns over ticket pricing, seating arrangements, and consumer complaints. The states of New York and New Jersey have initiated an inquiry into FIFA’s tournament ticketing procedures, and the organization is now under legal scrutiny.
According to a joint statement issued by New York Attorney General Letitia James and New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport, authorities are looking into concerns about soaring ticket prices, dynamic pricing practices, and alleged seat location inaccuracies at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, NJ.
FIFA Faces Subpoena Over Ticket Pricing
State officials confirmed that FIFA has been served with a subpoena as part of the investigation. The inquiry focuses on whether consumers were misled while purchasing tickets for the highly anticipated 2026 World Cup matches.
Authorities stated that ticket prices for the tournament “far exceeded the prices for any previous World Cup tournament,” raising concerns among fans and consumer watchdog groups.
The controversy intensified after FIFA introduced “dynamic pricing” for World Cup tickets — a strategy commonly used in concerts and sporting events where ticket prices fluctuate based on demand.
Many supporters complained that prices increased dramatically during the sales process, making tickets unaffordable for average fans hoping to attend matches in the United States.
Fans Complain About Seat Location Issues
Beyond pricing concerns, FIFA is also under scrutiny for alleged seating discrepancies at MetLife Stadium, one of the tournament’s marquee venues.
Several fans claimed they selected seats in a particular category during purchase but later received tickets located farther from the pitch than expected. Consumer complaints reportedly highlighted confusion regarding the stadium’s four seating categories.
The situation became more complicated after FIFA introduced a premium “Front Category” seating option after initial ticket sales had already begun. Critics argue that the late addition created uncertainty and may have affected previously purchased ticket allocations.
New York Attorney General Letitia James said fans deserve transparency and fairness throughout the ticket-buying process.
“New Yorkers have been waiting years for the World Cup to come to their backyard, and they deserve a fair shot at affordable tickets,” James said in the official release.
She added that fans should not be manipulated into paying excessive prices and should receive the exact seats they believed they purchased.
FIFA Defends High Ticket Prices
FIFA President Gianni Infantino defended the organization’s pricing strategy when questioned about the unusually expensive tickets.
Infantino argued that the tournament has limited ticket availability combined with massive worldwide demand, naturally driving prices higher. FIFA has maintained that dynamic pricing is designed to reflect market demand and maximize access to fans globally.
However, critics believe the system favors wealthier buyers while making the World Cup increasingly inaccessible for ordinary supporters.
