He was born on 15 February 1935 in Faizabad district of Uttar Pradesh. His real name was Syed Mohammad Badr. Since childhood, he was fond of poetry. It is said that he started writing poetry at the age of just seven. He completed BA, MA and PhD in Urdu Literature from Aligarh Muslim University. Later he also became a lecturer there.

Bashir Badr introduced Urdu poetry in the language of common people. In his ghazals, love, loneliness, relationships, pain and the truth of life were visible in very simple words. This was the reason why his couplets soon became popular. His famous couplets like ‘There must have been some compulsions, no one is unfaithful like this’ and ‘Let the light of your memories stay with us, don’t know in which street the evening of life happens’, like many couplets and ghazals are still on people’s lips.

The Meerut riots of 1987 came as a big pain in his life. His house was burnt in that violence, in which his books, diaries and many unpublished ghazals were also reduced to ashes. This accident had broken him to the core. For some time he almost gave up writing and later he came and settled in Bhopal.
Bashir Badr received many major honors for his literary contribution. The Government of India honored him with Padmashree.
