Why did India-US relations deteriorate in ‘Trump 2.0’? Mary Milben raised questions

New Delhi: Mary Milben, an African-American singer and a supporter of India-US relations, has expressed concern over the distance in relations between the two countries during the second term of Donald Trump. He said that this time the President was not given proper advice on matters related to India within the Trump administration, due to which tension in bilateral relations has increased. In an exclusive conversation, Milben admitted that the current situation is much different than before and there is a lack of trust between the two countries.

Mention of Marco Rubio’s visit to India

Mary Milben also mentioned the recent visit of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to India. He praised the hospitality of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Indian leadership, but also said that the visit did not result in any concrete improvement in relations. According to him, the existing political differences will not end by mere formal meetings. He clearly said that till now the Trump administration has not taken any major or effective steps towards strengthening relations with India.

Milben believes that the political damage caused between the two countries is very deep and will take time to heal. He said that the eyes of leaders around the world are on the upcoming US presidential elections and India is also keeping a close watch on it. According to him, future American policy will depend on which direction Washington’s leadership moves after the elections.

He also pointed out a big difference between Trump’s first term and the current term. Milben said that in the first term, the President had advisors around him who understood and respected India and the Indian-American community. In the same period, big programs like ‘Howdy Modi’ were organized, which gave new strength to the relations between the two countries. But during the current tenure, the President was given wrong advice on issues related to India, especially the tariff policy.

Why did Mary Milben express her displeasure?

Mary Milben also expressed displeasure over some comments made against the Indian-American community and immigrants. However, he praised the efforts of the current US Ambassador Sergio Gore and said that he is trying to improve relations. He stressed that India and America are two big democracies in the world and their relations are very important. According to him, respect, dialogue and human values should be given priority in future American policies.
