Backrooms is now in theaters nationwide. Here’s what you should watch, read, and play after seeing the new A24 horror movie.
Directed by Kane Parsons, Backrooms follows a therapist’s quest to find her patient after he stumbled into a “dimension beyond reality.” Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, and Lukita Maxwell star.
What other Backrooms content should you check out after seeing the A24 movie?
Now that you’ve seen Backrooms, the first thing to explore is the Backrooms creepypasta, one of the movie’s inspirations. The fictional location began as a 4chan thread featuring “disquieting images that just feel off.”
The 4chan thread inspired Parsons to create his YouTube series Backrooms, the next thing to watch after the movie. Set in the 1990s, Parsons’ series follows the fictional Async Research Institute and the organization’s attempt to study the Backrooms.
If you don’t have time to watch the entire series, the first video, The Backrooms (Found Footage)will suffice. The suspenseful video, which has almost 80 million views, chronicles a journey into the Backrooms as seen through a camera.
Parsons recommends checking out the YouTube series after the movie. During a Reddit AMAa user asked if they should watch the series before the movie. “Either/or,” Parsons wrote. “The overall experience can benefit from a viewing of the series prior to or after the film.”
In an interview with LetterboxdParsons also revealed the pop-culture inspirations behind his web series and movie, including the puzzle-platform game Portal 2, the TV show Mr. Robot, and the anime series Paranoia Agent.
For the gamers, Escape the Backrooms is now available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. You can also purchase it for $12.99 on the PS Store. The game was originally released in 2022 on PC. The game channels the spirit of the web series, as players must explore the creepy space and figure out a way to escape.

Backrooms made its way to television in American Horror Stories, the spin-off of American Horror Story. Titled Backrooms, a father is transported into the liminal space as he searches for his missing son. The episode stars Michael Imperioli, Matthew Maher, David Pittu, and Natalie Gold.
The American Horror Stories episode is now streaming on Hulu and Disney+.
