Political turmoil in Malaysia: PM Anwar Ibrahim may hold general elections soon amid tension in the coalition

Malaysia Early Elections Political Crisis: At present, many types of political and huge economic crises have arisen simultaneously in Malaysia. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is very worried seeing the increasing tension in the ruling coalition. Therefore, he is seriously considering holding general elections in the country before time. The next general elections are scheduled to be held in February 2028.

But due to political instability, Anwar may seek the king’s consent to dissolve Parliament first. According to government MPs, elections can be held in the country only in the month of July. Earlier, due to the ongoing heavy political conflict since 2020, the election cycle was completely broken. Anwar had done a great job of bringing stability in the country by forming a unity government in 2022.

State and general elections

Malaysia is a country with a federal system where most state elections are held concurrently with federal elections. Some state governments fell before the completion of their tenure, breaking the cycle. Elections are due in the states of Johor, Malacca and Sarawak next year, which could reduce costs. In November 2022, Anwar formed the government by combining the Pakatan Harapan faction and Barisan Nasional (BN). However, this ruling coalition has faced internal differences and serious allegations of corruption. Johor BN has announced to contest the upcoming state elections independently without the support of Pakatan.

Najeeb Razak case

Anwar has faced immense pressure over the royal pardon given to former Prime Minister Najib Razak. Najib Razak is in jail since 2022 for his involvement in the billion-dollar 1MDB scam. The UMNO party is continuously putting strong pressure on Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government on this matter. The energy subsidy bill has risen to 7 billion ringgit, or $1.77 billion, due to the war on Iran. This has increased huge and serious pressure on the financial position of the Malaysian government. Analysts believe Anwar will need a new mandate before cutting subsidies.

scattered opposition

Seeing the fragmented position of the opposition in the country, Anwar may benefit from early elections. Dozens of leaders have been dismissed from the party due to massive internal strife in PAS’s ally Bersatu. This weakness of the opposition can prove to be a golden opportunity for Anwar Ibrahim’s alliance.
