HC relief, albeit interim, for Bengali actor Parambrata over ‘provocative’ 2021 post

Bengali actor Parambrata Chatterjee, who was recently accused along with colleague Swastika Mukherjee of abetting and instigating post-election violence in West Bengal in 2021, and an advocate lodged a first information report (FIR) against them on the same, has received a court relief.

The Calcutta High Court granted the relief, an interim one, to the 45-year-old actor, who had approached it seeking anticipatory bail. It directed authorities to refrain from any coercive action as long as he cooperates with the ongoing police probe.

The advocate, Joydeep Sen, lodged the case against Chatterjee and Mukerjee at South Kolkata’s Gariahat Police Station. The alleged provocation included “murders of BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) workers, the rape and molestation of BJP woman workers, and the violence carried out by the Trinamool Congress in 2021”.

The charges were filed under Sections 109 and 153A of the Indian Penal Code, with Section 153A being a non-bailable offence. Section 153A criminalises the promotion of enmity, hatred and disharmony between various groups of people. Since the case is related to 2021, the FIR was registered under IPC instead of the currently used Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Actor’s 2021 tweet lands him in trouble

It all happened over a post that Chatterjee made on X after the TMC swept the elections five years ago, nullifying the BJP’s challenge. On May 2, 2021, the day the election results came out, he said in the post, “Aj Biswha Ragrani Diwas ghoshito hok! (Let today be declared the World Thrashing Day)”. Mukherjee responded to that, saying, “Hahahah Hok Hok (yes, let it be so)” along with two beer-mug cheer emojis.

Actor defends saying he responded to BJP leader’s threat

In an interview recently, Chatterjee said his 2021 comment was in response to a threat issued by Dilip Ghosh, the hardline BJP leader who allegedly threatened to thrash the artists who dissented (he used the term “ragrano”).

Chatterjee was also seen campaigning for TMC candidates in various areas of south Bengal ahead of this year’s election. He was also heard saying that the 2026 battle was one between the people of Bengal and Bengali self-respect.

The actor, who has also featured in Hindi films such as Storyalso faced a backlash recently when he said that he was forced to make compromises during the previous regime because of his infant son, who was born in June 2025. Chatterjee was accused of hiding behind his child to shift allegations, laying bare his hypocrisy. Although his wife Piya Chakraborty said there was no question of Chatterjee aligning with the BJP.

Mukherjee was recently seen appearing before the officers in Gariahat Police Station, where she was questioned for an hour.
