‘Limitless potential’: US envoy Sergio Gor signals major push for deeper India-US economic ties

The United States is actively working on recalibrating its export control policy while deepening strategic technology and economic ties with India, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor said on Friday, signalling renewed momentum in bilateral relations between the two countries.

Speaking in Delhi, Gor said an interim trade agreement between India and the United States is currently on the table for finalisation, describing the present phase of engagement as a major opportunity to transform bilateral ties into a more seamless economic partnership.

“There is opportunity to transform US-India relations into a more seamless economic relationship,” the envoy said, while highlighting expanding cooperation in trade, technology and strategic sectors.

The ambassador also underlined Washington’s growing recognition of India’s geopolitical and economic importance. “US realises India’s potential; we are keen to boost overall cooperation,” Gor stated.

The remarks come amid ongoing efforts by both countries to strengthen collaboration in advanced technology, semiconductor manufacturing, defence production, artificial intelligence, clean energy and critical supply chains. India and the United States have significantly expanded strategic engagement over the past few years through initiatives focused on emerging technologies and economic resilience.

Gor said there is “limitless potential” in taking forward India-US relations, reflecting Washington’s continued emphasis on deeper engagement with New Delhi at a time of shifting global economic and geopolitical alignments.

One of the key highlights of the envoy’s remarks was the reference to export control policies. The United States has been reviewing frameworks governing the transfer of sensitive technologies and high-end equipment to strategic partners, including India. Recalibration of export controls could potentially ease technology cooperation in sectors such as defence systems, aerospace, semiconductor manufacturing and advanced computing.

India and the US have steadily strengthened technology ties under initiatives including the Initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology (iCET), launched to expand collaboration in strategic sectors. Both countries have also been pushing for stronger private-sector investment and supply chain integration.

Trade relations between the two countries have grown rapidly over the last decade, with the US remaining one of India’s largest trading partners. Bilateral trade has crossed significant milestones in recent years despite occasional disagreements over tariffs, market access and digital trade regulations.

Officials from both countries have been engaged in negotiations aimed at resolving pending trade issues and enhancing market access opportunities. The proposed interim trade agreement is expected to address selected trade concerns while paving the way for broader economic cooperation in the future.

The envoy’s remarks also come amid increasing global competition over technology leadership and supply chain security, with India emerging as a key strategic partner for the US in the Indo-Pacific region.

Analysts say stronger India-US coordination in technology and trade could play a major role in reshaping regional economic architecture and reducing dependence on existing global manufacturing hubs.

Further details regarding the interim trade agreement and export control policy changes are expected to emerge in the coming weeks as discussions between the two sides continue.
