News of great relief for electricity consumers, due to this decision of the court, they have stopped getting out of pocket.

A very relieving and big news has come to the fore for crores of electricity consumers of Uttar Pradesh. The efforts of UP Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) to increase electricity prices in the name of fuel surcharge have suffered a major setback. Power Corporation’s plan to make additional recovery from the public’s pocket from the month of June has been completely shelved. Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has taken a strict stance on this matter and has completely banned the plans of UPPCL, due to which the consumers have been saved from the huge shock of expensive electricity.

Electricity Regulatory Commission declared recovery completely illegal

According to the latest media reports, UP Power Corporation Limited had taken a major decision to increase the electricity prices only last week. The whole plan of UPPCL was to collect 10 percent fuel surcharge from consumers from the month of June itself. Under this scheme, the general public would have to pay an extra Rs 10 for every Rs 100 electricity bill, which would spoil the budget of every household. But after listening to the strong and precise arguments of the Consumer Council, Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has declared this 10% tariff increase as completely illegal and wrong. Along with this, the order of this increased tariff has been banned with immediate effect.

Heavy surcharge was going to be added to the bill for the month of June

If we understand this whole matter, then this entire dispute is related to the outstanding fees of March 2026. UPPCL’s contention was that 10% ‘Fuel and Power Purchase Adjustment Surcharge’ (FPPAS) for the month of March 2026 was now to be added to the June bill. Power Corporation, citing an old notification of the Electricity Regulatory Commission, had said that as per the rules, the fuel surcharge of one month is added to the bill of the fourth month. UPPCL had also claimed that this fee could be increased further in the coming months after June.

All the arguments of Power Corporation failed in the court.

On this entire controversy, Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation continuously maintained that there was no increase in the basic power tariff i.e. the normal rates of electricity. According to the corporation, this was just a simple fuel surcharge, which would not make a huge difference to the electricity bill of the general public. However, the Regulatory Commission, keeping the economic interest of the consumers at the top, rejected all these arguments of the corporation and has completely put a stop to this extortion starting from June.
