Grenade at a Hospital, A foreign link, and one arrest — What really happened in Gurdaspur?
Punjab Police has arrested the alleged main perpetrator behind the explosion at Multani Hospital in KalanaurGurdaspur district, after investigators confirmed that a grenade was used in the attack. The arrest was announced by Gurdaspur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Aditya Sharmawho said a joint operation involving Punjab Police and its Counter-Intelligence Wing led to a breakthrough in the case.
Explosion reported at hospital premises
According to SSP Sharma, the incident came to light at around 3:00 PMwhen the Station House Officer (SHO) of Kalanaur received information about a loud explosion at Multani Hospital. Police officials, including the SHO and the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), immediately rushed to the location and conducted an inspection of the blast site. A forensic examination was subsequently carried out to determine the nature of the explosion. “Our forensic team confirmed the presence of a grenade,” SSP Sharma stated while providing details of the investigation.
The confirmation prompted authorities to launch a large-scale probe involving multiple police teams and intelligence units.
Joint operation leads to arrest
Punjab Police constituted several investigation teams following the blast. According to officials, the probe relied on a combination of technical surveillance, intelligence gathering and human intelligence inputs. The investigation ultimately led to the arrest of Dharmendrawho has been identified as the principal accused in the case. “The main perpetrator, Dharmendra, was apprehended. He is a resident of Agwan village under the jurisdiction of Police Station Kalanaur,” SSP Sharma said.
Police have not yet disclosed additional details regarding the motive behind the attack or whether other individuals were directly involved.
Foreign connection emerges during probe
A significant development in the investigation is the emergence of a suspected foreign trade linked to the case. Officials said the name of an overseas-based handler surfaced during the course of the investigation, prompting authorities to widen the scope of the probe.
“The name of a foreign handler has surfaced in this matter, and the police are currently conducting a serious and thorough investigation into all relevant facts,” SSP Sharma said. Investigators are examining all possible links, communication channels and associations connected to the accused and the suspected handler.
Security agencies continue investigation
The incident comes amid heightened vigilance by security agencies in Punjab over attempts to disrupt public order through the use of explosives and cross-border criminal networks. Punjab Police said the investigation remains active and further arrests or disclosures may follow as evidence is examined.
Reaffirming the force’s commitment to public safety, SSP Sharma said that, in line with the directions of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Punjab Director General of Police (DGP) Gaurav Yadavthe Punjab Police remains committed to maintaining security and law and order across the state.
Authorities have urged the public to remain vigilant while assuring residents that all aspects of the case are being investigated thoroughly. The probe into the grenade blast and the suspected foreign link remains ongoing.
